One of the foremost American genre painters of the 19th century, George Caleb Bingham is best known for his compelling depictions of frontier life along the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. Opening at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on June 17, Navigating the West: George Caleb Bingham and the River is the first major Bingham exhibition in more than 25 years. It will bring together for the first time 16 of his iconic river paintings. This extraordinary series chronicles the transformation of America's western wilderness and established an indelible image of the West for the nation. More than 40 of Bingham's masterful preparatory drawings depicting fur traders and boatmen at work and play on the inland rivers will provide an unprecedented look at Bingham's artistic process. Bingham's early masterpiece, Fur Traders Descending the Missouri (1845), from the collection of the Metropolitan, will be featured in the exhibition. (more...)

This summer, On Site Opera(OSO) will present a new production that exemplifies the company's mission to stage operas in non-traditional locations ideally suited to the stories they tell. OSO will offer an immersive site-specific staging of Giovanni Paisiello's The Barber of Seville at the opulent Fabbri Mansion (House of the Redeemer) on New York City's Upper East Side. Conducted by the company's newly appointed Music Director,Geoffrey McDonald and directed by OSO's Co-Founder and Artistic Director, Eric Einhorn, the production will be updated to the early decades of the twentieth century (when the Fabbri Mansion was built) and staged in themansion's outdoor courtyard and library. The annual Will on the Hill event welcomes Members of Congress from both sides of the aisle and distinguished Washington insiders onto the Shakespeare Theatre Company stage to perform a political satire infused with Shakespearean language and references. The event pays tribute to the unique dynamic of our city and provides a wonderful way to engage new audiences. Proceeds from this event support STC's many education, artistic, and community engagement programs including in-school workshops and online learning resources that inspire new and diverse audiences and deepen the connection to classical theatre in learners of all ages.
