BWW Interview: David Fynn Chats UNDATEABLE & #15SecondShakespeare
by Matt Tamanini - Nov 27, 2015

Bad news comedy fans, after spending most of your Black Friday in a post-shopping, tryptophan-induced coma, you will not be able to share your evening with the hilarious cast of NBC's live sitcom UNDATEABLE. Preempted by the holiday favorite, the National Dog Show, the Black Eyes Bar crew will be back with an all-new live episode next Friday; well, actually two all-new episodes, since the UNDATEABLE gang performs each episode twice, once live for the East Coast, and again live for the West Coast. One of the joys of my Monday morning is watching both versions back-to-back on Hulu to see what jokes were added for the second broadcast. (more...)

BWW Review: IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE: A LIVE RADIO PLAY at Washington Stage Guild
by Greg Alcock - Nov 16, 2015

It's Christmas Eve 1946 in Washington, DC and you've ventured out into the cold with your family to the local radio station to see a live performance of Frank Capra's yet-to-be-classic, It's a Wonderful Life. Taking the stage among dozens of sound effects tools are some of your favorite local radio actors, ready to immerse you in the idealized world of Bedford Falls and the life of the town's hero, George Bailey. As the five actors and one foley artist take you through the sentimental story, they portray dozens of characters and create dozens more sounds as your imagination is left to paint the full picture. Every actor wants his or her big break. BWW Review: Stellar Ensemble Soars in Wilbury Group's Fantastic STUPID F#%*ING BIRD
by Robert Barossi - Jan 26, 2016

There's a moment in the play Stupid F#%*ing Bird, currently playing at The Wilbury Group, where a character talks about how contemporary theaters adapt and reimagine Shakespeare. Certainly, it's always a tricky proposition, reconfiguring a classic work and attempting to bring it into the current era while maintaining all the aspects, themes and characteristics that made it great. Or, at least, finding a way to reshape it so it will hold up in front of today's audiences, keeping them engaged and entertained within of our modern-day context. As written by Aaron Posner, adapted from the classic Anton Chekhov play The Seagull, Bird is a play that more than holds its own as a thought provoking, entertaining and hilarious modern take on a theatrical classic. BWW Reviews: YEAR OF THE FAMILY Surprises and Scandalises at King's Cross Theatre
by Brodie Paparella - Feb 11, 2016

Tooth and Sinew theatre company have once again shown their penchant for controversy and passion in their latest offering, an abstraction of renowned Scottish playwright Anthony Neilson's Year of the Family. When an audience member steps into the domestic environment of strangers, they always know they're in for an experience to push boundaries and transport into real introspection, which Ash Bell has pushed even further in her stage design. Ultimately, what audiences can expect is a humourously voyeuristic piece they can comfortably walk away from feeling better about their own trauma. (more...)

BWW Review: BLACK COMEDY at Ojai Art Center Theater
by Cary Ginell - Feb 1, 2016

For the first ten minutes of Peter Shaffer's knockabout farce, Black Comedy, the stage is dark, as engaged Londoneers Brindsley Miller and Carol Melkett get ready to receive wealthy German art collector Georg Bamberger, who they hope will purchase Brindlsey's latest modern sculpture. But a blown fuse plunges their home into darkness, and that's when the lights on the stage finally go up. Confused? Well, the story of the anticipated sale of Brindsley's work is merely the MacGuffin in Black Comedy, something only the characters care about. What's important to the audience is the show's topsy-turvy lighting gimmick, one that gives Black Comedy its name: a riotous jumble of mistaken identities, complex blocking, and side-splitting slapstick. If everyone in the cast stays healthy, the show will run through February 14 at the Ojai Art Center Theater. (more...)
