Americana Singer Valerie June Coming to SOPAC, 6/12
by BWW News Desk - May 9, 2016

Valerie June brings her bluesy voice from Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to the South Orange Performing Arts Center June 12 at 7:30 p.m. Valerie's astonishing and singular sound is a blend of rural Roots and Country that bridges Alan Lomax's acoustic field recordings with biting, electric Indie-Blues. The singer-songwriter's voice percolates somewhere between Dolly Parton and Billie Holiday. It is a stop-you-dead-in-your-tracks kind of voice, the kind that grips your imagination and paints her Southern portraits in vivid detail. (more...)

BWW Dance Interview: JELKO YURESHA Reflects On His Past and The Dancers of Today
by Juan Michael Porter II - May 23, 2016

At 78, Jelko Yuresha has come to resemble a lion in repose. I recognize him immediately as I enter the lobby -- I am early, he is even earlier -- and what strikes me more than his subtle smile is his eyes. They are the eyes of a man who retains a zest for life though it is evident that little amuses him. This comes as no surprise. After all, he has seen much and traveled far. As we begin the dance of exchanging pleasantries, it becomes apparent that behind the guise of a charming gentlemen I am speaking to the dance version of James Bond -- as played by Sean Connery. BWW Review: AN EVENING WITH MATTHEW MORRISON at Mayo Performing Arts Center
by Leigh Scheps - May 23, 2016

I've met Matthew several times over the last decade and a half. The first time was in 2002, right after Hairspray opened. The second instance was at 54 Below, when he was seeing his on-screen arch nemesis, Jane Lynch, perform. Most recently, I got the chance to briefly chat with him backstage after a performance of Finding Neverland.  When I left the theater, I remember saying he was the most gracious star on Broadway.  Friday, was no different. BWW Review: AS YOU LIKE IT Is the Right Amount of a Good Thing
by Marietta Lunceford - May 13, 2016

One of the least talked about and yet most wonderful things about our area is the Alabama School of Fine Arts, situated in downtown Birmingham. It boasts the beautiful Dorothy Jemison Day Theatre. Although I have been to this theatre several times, today was the first time to be in the building during a school day and in the theatre to see the kids from ASFA perform. They are performing Shakespeare's AS YOU LIKE IT this weekend and it is worth your time to support them. (more...)

BWW Review: Circuit Entrances With PINKALICIOUS THE MUSICAL
by Joseph Baker - Mar 28, 2016

I remember when, in the 1930's Shirley Temple vehicle POOR LITTLE RICH GIRL, poor Jack Haley and Alice Faye had to implore, 'You've Gotta Each Your Spinach, Baby'; and in Circuit's charming (and short) production of PINKALICIOUS THE MUSICAL, with Book and Lyrics by Elizabeth and Victoria Kern and Music by John Gregor, poor 'Mr. and Mrs. Pinkerton' (gleefully played by Marc Gill and Brooke Papritz) have a similar problem with their daughter 'Pinkalicious' (the engaging Carly Crawford, A.K.A. 'Peter Pan' during the Christmas holidays). It seems that the color-preoccupied pint-sizer has a condition known as 'Pinkititis,' wrought by an immoderate obsession with . . . dare I say it? . . . pink cupcakes -- MUDDY'S BAKERY, GIGI'S CUPCAKES, lock your doors! BWW Review: St. Louis Actors' Studio's Amusing IVANOV
by Chris Gibson - Apr 29, 2016

IVANOV is a formative work in the canon of Anton Chekhov. He was presenting us with the situations and character types we'd come to know and understand, but with the lack of irony that often permeates his material. The St. Louis Actors' Studio has put together a splendid evening of entertainment with their superbly performed and directed production. However, it should be noted that this is a translation by Tom Stoppard, and thus, should be viewed with that in mind. Adaptations are tricky enough on their own, but when you're dealing with a play written in another language, you're often relying on a literal translation in order to produce your take. And, that's precisely what this is. It's Tom Stoppard's IVANOV, full of unexpected humor and nicely etched characterizations, but far afield from Chekhov's early foray, which he himself revised after its initial premier. Either way, this is worth checking out, and surprisingly amusing. (more...)

BWW Interview: Being That Sixth Person-Talking with Director Timothy Douglas about DISGRACED at Arena Stage
by Ellen Burns - Apr 26, 2016

Lest you might think careers are well-planned, organized endeavors, take a lesson from director Timothy Douglas, who is gracing Washington in a return visit to Arena Stage (last season's King Hedley II was his Arena Stage debut) with his work with Ayad Akhtar's Disgraced, a play about being Muslim or, perhaps more importantly, being perceived as Muslim, in America in current times. 'I tripped into directing,' says Timothy, 'I went to LA as an actor, but found I didn't have the skin for it, so I stepped back and thought I'd be a career teacher, but through some dumb luck, I directed a show, and some people liked what they saw, and I ended up with the Center Theatre Group in LA, as a director. When I finally stopped resisting the path, it started to work.' 'It seems every Good Thing,' he laughingly reflects, 'has happened as I was being dragged through the back door kicking and screaming.' So, it seems, tripping doesn't always mean falling. (more...)

NEW YORK, April 21, 2016 /PRNewswire/ He's become one of the most polarizing figures in modern-day politics and pop culture, but Donald Trump indisputably has fans both bigand small. When 8-year old Chloe announced that she thought Trump would make a great President, stating, 'I love Donald Trump. I see him on TV all the time. I want to be like him because he's really rich and gets what he wants,' the reaction waswellmixed. Her classmates were mystified, her mother horrified and her dad was philosophical, 'I like the fact that an 8-year old can see the positives in a man who so many others can only see negatives in.'
