RECOVERY FROM SEXUAL ADDICTION Offers Advice in Sexual HealthRECOVERY FROM SEXUAL ADDICTION Offers Advice in Sexual Health
by BWW News Desk - Sep 14, 2015

Resembling exorbitant use of drug and alcohol, sexual addiction is known to have antisocial ramifications. In fact, to the sexually addicted, enslavement to sex becomes the most powerful force in his or her existence. According to Dr. Patrick Carnes, a leading authority in sexual health, almost half of males throughout the world will experience unacceptable sexual behavior at certain points of their earthly existence. Adverse sexual behavior typically tends to intensify over time, making recovery more challenging. Having an informed appreciation of the causes of male obsessive sexual behavior and an awareness of treatment options is what the book, Recovery from Sexual Addiction: A Man's Guide, by Paul Becker, LPC, is all about. BWW Review: THE QUARRY is Surreal, Charming and Deeply TouchingBWW Review: THE QUARRY is Surreal, Charming and Deeply Touching
by Frank Benge - Oct 5, 2015

THE QUARRY, a new play by Greg Pierce, now in the work's second staging at Hyde Park Theatre, uses an unusual and surrealistic narrative style for what is basically a detective story to an effectively provocative effect. A series of puzzling events in the marble quarry in an unnamed town in Vermont cause Jean (Katherine Catmull), an antisocial widow, to start her own investigation. As the play begins, Jean talks about how she enjoys staring into the quarry beside her house, how the sound of the machines soothes her, and how much she misses her husband, Sammy (Ken Webster). Jean has packed up her house because she was planning to 'off herself.' Her reason for this is much more pragmatic than one would expect. Her reason to end her life is because she believes that every life has a "main story" and hers is complete. However, she's decided to stick around because of the mystery in the quarry...the discovery of three marble steps leading to nowhere. Jean's opening monologue only hints at what is to come. We learn the story in fragments as the other characters speak. (more...)

BWW Review: REALMS OF THE UNTOLD; Intriguing, if Not Fully-Realized Tales of TerrorBWW Review: REALMS OF THE UNTOLD; Intriguing, if Not Fully-Realized Tales of Terror
by Matt Tamanini - Oct 3, 2015

Just in time for Halloween, Orlando theatre production company Dark Side of Saturn introduces a new collection of short plays collectively titled REALMS OF THE UNTOLD. The show, written by Corey Volence (Orlando Fringe's KEY OF E), plays through October 10th at The Venue. Clearly inspired by classic horror and terror anthology series THE TWILIGHT ZONE, REALMS OF THE UNTOLD boasts six fairly intriguing premises; however, the execution of each, in terms of writing and performance, varies greatly from scene to scene. The vignettes are ultimately an enjoyable precursor to the rest of the spooky holiday attractions around town, but they don't rise to the goosebump-inspiring level that you would hope to find in a show subtitled 'Six Tales of the Strange and Macabre.' BWW Reviews: The MUNY's Awesome INTO THE WOODS at Forest ParkBWW Reviews: The MUNY's Awesome INTO THE WOODS at Forest Park
by Chris Gibson - Jul 22, 2015

I purposely avoided the recent film version of INTO THE WOODS because I really didn't find the previews or the stunt casting appropriate. For me, it's a work that requires an audience to use their imagination to a great extent, and movies tend to give form to those things that are much better left conjured up in your own mind. That's why my son and I absolutely loved The MUNY's current presentation of the show. Let's face it, a woodland setting created utilizing green screen technology and a few key set pieces is nowhere near as effective at conveying the atmosphere desired, especially when you already have those actual elements growing freely at the back of this marvelous outdoor stage. Stephen Sondheim (music and lyrics) and James Lapine (book) crafted a brilliant mash-up of several fairy tales and fables that is smart, funny, and, ultimately, touching. When I asked my boy what he thought of the show at the end of the night he neatly summed it up: 'I thought it was awesome!' I agree wholeheartedly. Superbly cast and conceived, this is a production that's simply tailor made for The MUNY. Go see it, and take your kids with you! It may have a few moments that are a bit gruesome or adult in content, but they'll have a wonderful time, and so will you! (more...)
