On Monday, November 19, the membership of the Audience Development Corporation honored the Castillo Theatre with wins in all five of the categories in which it was nominated for the Vivian Robinson AUDELCO Recognition Awards for Excellence in Black Theatre (aka the Viv Awards) for its production of Sally and Tom (The American Way) by Fred Newman and Annie Roboff, directed by Gabrielle L. Kurlander. The musical looks at the relationship between Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings, his slave and mistress for 30 years, exploring the tragic contradiction at the heart of American history and culture. The Castillo Theatre production of Carmen's Place (A Fantasy), called "an aria to behold" by critics in this opera-within-a musical running through June 16. Carmen's Place features an original pop score by Annie Roboff and Fred Newman, and in its show-within-the-show, some of the best-known and best-loved operatic numbers ever performed. Director Gabrielle L. Kurlander received the AUDELCO "Viv" Recognition Award for Excellence in Black Theatre as Best Director of a Musical Production in 2012 for Newman-Roboff's Sally and Tom (The American Way). Beth Tuttle, managing director of the Alexandria, VA-based consulting firm METStrategies, LLC, will become president and CEO of the Cultural Data Project, the project's board of directors announced today. In her new role, Tuttle will lead the project-currently housed at The Pew Charitable Trusts in Philadelphia-as it transitions to an independent 501(c)(3) organization and furthers its plans to serve as a national resource for the arts and cultural sector. Scott Fitzgerald's masterpiece The Great Gatsby, there is renewed interest in the legendary writer's work. Fans will delight in knowing that The Saturday Evening Post is working with intellectual property studio SD Entertainment and romance transmedia and company BroadLit to publish F.Scott Fitzgerald's Gatsby Girls-a collection of his first eight short stories originally published in The Saturday Evening Post. Included are the original illustrations, cover art, reproductions of the actual pages of the Post, plus a fascinating introduction by the Post's historian.
