Independent Bookstores in Seven Cities to Host Banned Books Week Events
by BWW News Desk - Sep 26, 2016

American Booksellers for Free Expression (ABFE), a project of the American Booksellers Association, has announced that seven independent bookstores will participate in 'A Night of Silenced Voices' on Tuesday, September 27, to celebrate diversity and honor freedom of expression during this year's Banned Books Week (September 25-October 1). To highlight challenges to books written by authors of diverse backgrounds, Banned Books Week is exploring why their books are disproportionately singled out for attack. These bookstores will host events on the evening of September 27: · Housing Works Bookstore Cafe, New York, NY · Politics & Prose Bookstore, Washington, DC · Books & Books, Coral Gables, FL · The Book Cellar, Chicago, IL · Tattered Cover Book Store, Denver, CO · Powell's City of Books, Portland, OR · Skylight Books, Los Angeles, CA A full list of events planned across the country is available on the online calendar: bannedbooksweek.org/events. 'Independent bookstores have always been strong supporters of Banned Books Week, and more than 500 will mount displays of banned and challenged titles this year. But this is the first time we have coordinated events on the same night,' says Chris Finan, ABFE director. Hundreds of books are banned or challenged in schools and libraries every year. The American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom estimates that more than half are written by authors of color, members of the LGBTQ community, people with disabilities, and ethnic, cultural, and religious minorities. A slideshow of some of the titles that are most frequently challenged because of their diversity can be viewed here, http://www.slideshare.net/mjacoby/frequently-challenged-or-banned-books-diversity-66176301 To highlight the value of free and open access to information, Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community - booksellers, publishers, librarians, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types - in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those that are unorthodox or unpopular. About Banned Books Week (www.bannedbooksweek.org) Banned Books Week is the only national celebration of the freedom to read. Launched in 1982, it is celebrated during the last week of September. It is sponsored by the American Booksellers Association, the American Library Association, the American Society of Journalists and Authors, the Association of American Publishers, the Association of American University Presses, the Authors Guild, the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, the Dramatists Legal Defense Fund, the Freedom to Read Foundation, the National Coalition Against Censorship, the National Council of Teachers of English, PEN America, the People for The American Way Foundation, and Project Censored. It is endorsed by the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress. About the American Booksellers Association (www.BookWeb.org) Founded in 1900, the American Booksellers Association is a not-for-profit trade association devoted to meeting the needs of its core members - independently owned bookstores with storefront locations - through education, information dissemination, business products and services, and advocacy. ABA exists to protect and promote the interests of independent retail book businesses, as well as to protect the First Amendment rights of every American. The association actively supports free speech, literacy, and programs that support local and independent retail shops. A board of 10 booksellers governs the Association. ABA is headquartered in White Plains, New York. (more...)

Nostalgia Gets "Nutty" with New Professional Peanut & Nut Butter Maker
by BWW News Desk - Nov 7, 2016

In some form or fashion, peanut butter seems to be a staple in every American household. From an after-school snack to late night fuel for midterm exams, peanut butter has been ingrained in The American Way of life. Going hand-in-hand, consumers are also becoming more and more mindful of the additives and preservatives in their foods, and they're beginning to seek out simpler ingredients and healthier alternatives to the store-bought varieties. To help with the growing love of homemade nut butters, Nostalgia has developed a simple-to-use Professional Peanut & Nut Butter Maker to make preparing homemade nut butters a much easier task. Outwardly, the Professional Peanut & Nut Butter Maker is reminiscent of a meat grinder. Complete with a durable motor, three-position grind switch and die-cast aluminum auger, this unit dispenses nut butters, like almond, cashew and sunflower seed butters, in seconds. Fittingly, operation of the Professional Peanut & Nut Butter Maker is as simple as the ingredients that go into it. Simply fill the hopper with up to one pound of a favorite nut, fill the oil dispenser with oil, and switch on the unit to start the process. In seconds, fresh and natural nut butter begins to dispense from the chute. 'Another great trend is the rise of sweet spreads, like honey-peanut butter or maple-macadamia nut,' says Gregg Bond, owner of Nostalgia Products LLC, 'and this item is perfect for crafting your very own homemade sweet nut butter spreads.' So, when done making nut butter, fine-tune the flavor by mixing in sweeteners and spices, like honey, sugar and cinnamon. Several recipes are included with the unit, but the flavor combinations are really only limited by imagination. When the perfect blend of fresh, natural nut butter is realized, spread on a piece of toast or dab a bit onto a stalk of celery for a healthy and delicious snack. The Nostalgia Professional Peanut & Nut Butter Maker is currently available online with a suggested retail price of $79.99. Nostalgia Professional Peanut & Nut Butter Maker (Item # PBM500) Product Features: - Simply fill the large hopper with up to 1 lb. of your favorite type of nut and turn the unit on - Durable die cast aluminum augur dispenses nut butter in seconds - Use the oil dispenser to achieve the perfect consistency - Customize with sweeteners and spices, like honey, sugar, and cinnamon - Try with almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, sunflower seeds and more - Two-position On/Off switch - Three-position grind switch w/ On/Off/Reverse options - BPA free (more...)

BWW Review: THE CONSUL, THE TRAMP AND AMERICA'S SWEETHEART Reminds Us What Democracy is Really About in America
by Shari Barrett - Nov 22, 2016

Now onstage at Theatre 40 in Beverly Hills, THE CONSUL, THE TRAMP AND AMERICA'S SWEETHEART tells a tale suggested by true events in the United Artist office of Mary Pickford that took place with Charlie Chaplin and Georg Gyssling, German Consul in Los Angeles and a Nazi party member, to discuss the upcoming production of Chaplin's film "The Great Dictator" and whether or not it should even be made. This meeting, witnessed by Pickford's novice secretary, Esther Hollombe (who turns out to be Jewish), would change all of their lives forever. (more...)

Critic's Choice: If Life's A Cabaret, Why Aren't You At The Theater?
by Jeffrey Ellis - Mar 10, 2016

Winter's apparently over - it's in the mid-70s, balmy and windy, as we write this - and even before Spring pops up all over, there's an amazing amount of good theater to be found in the Nashville area. In fact, there's so much to choose from that you have absolutely no excuse staying alone in your room. Instead, in the wise and wonderful words of Sally Bowles, life is a cabaret and you're far more likely to find that out in the darkened confines of a theater, where magic and mayhem is bound to happen. BWW Review: FUNNY VALENTINES at Chaffin's Barn
by Jeffrey Ellis - Feb 28, 2016

Ah, the 1970s - what a decade, am I right? - the perfect time period for theatrical farce, what with its polyester double-knit slacks, soft and silky Nik-Nik shirts, some swell television sitcoms and the rise of entertainment conglomerates to gobble up the so-called 'little guys' in order to allow commercialism to run amok and for the notion of selling out one's soul for personal gratification and financial gain to become part of The American Way of life. Let's face it: Isn't all that what has led to and created the current climate of political division and personal derision? (more...)
