Review: OUR TOWN at Syracuse Stage
by Dan and Julie Izzo - Apr 4, 2023

What did our critic think of OUR TOWN at Syracuse Stage? The Syracuse Stage production of Our Town celebrates the 125th anniversary of the birth of Thornton Wilder. One might think a play written in 1938 would be irrelevant for an audience in the 21st century. But it is important to remember that the world at that time faced a severe worldwide economic downturn, the danger of impending war, strong political division, rising nationalism and rapid technological advancement. Given that these problems plague us today, Our Town is especially meaningful in our time.

When the Nazis march into Paris, they capture Herschel and send him to a camp in Berlin. Herschel has a choice: to be paraded in front of the world's press as a celebrity scapegoat; or to confess the truth - and to lift the lid on, not just his own sexuality, but the scandal that has infiltrated the Third Reich!

Review: THE SOUND OF MUSIC at Theatre South Playhouse
by Joseph Harrison - Dec 4, 2022

Behind the spectacle, sets, large casts and costumes of many classic musicals are the relatable, human stories, the conflict, the hope and the pure joy of life. Often, however, as audience members we don’t see those things as clearly when distracted by falling chandeliers or giant dance numbers. But there is something emotionally raw and fulfilling when given the chance to see a story you know so well stripped down to its essence – exposing the beauty that has always been there. This was my experience seeing Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical THE SOUND OF MUSIC at Theatre South Playhouse – a beautiful story performed by a talented cast in a simple but immensely effective staging.
