BWW Review: Michael Feinstein and Marilyn Maye Give a Master Class in 'Summertime Swing' at Feinstein's/54 Below
by Amy Oestreicher - Sep 6, 2016

Summertime brings to mind nighttime fireflies, lemonade that makes your lips pucker, rocking chairs creaking on the front porch, and, like the famous Porgy and Bess tune of the same name, melodies that trickle into the night. Summertime Swing is the latest masterpiece and collaboration at its finest by the legendary Michael Feinstein and Marilyn Maye, evoking a sultry, steamy love letter to the fleeting season and a prime example of craft, art, and passion. The moment I walked into the dining room at Feinstein's/54 Below, where Summertime Swing played through September 1 a fashionably dressed gentleman greeted me with, 'It's a fantastic show.' The packed house was already alive with thrilling enthusiasm as they eagerly waited for the show to start. When you attend a show headlined by a golden age cabaret great and a prolific 'music revivalist' who happens to have the venue named for him, you come expecting to be no less than entertained. Summertime Swing elevated the art of summer entertainment tenfold--- a tribute to anything we could hope for in the last days of summer. (more...)

BWW Review: Tony Winner Patti LuPone Returns to the OC with COULDA, WOULDA, SHOULDA

The very second that Tony Award-winning Broadway Legend Patti LuPone sings---heck, even when she walks out before she belts a single note---you know you're in the presence of someone that deserves the mountains of accolades she has continuously enjoyed through a very long, illustrious career on the stage. That very storied career became the abundantly cheeky narrative jumping-off point for her latest one-woman concert entitled COULDA, WOULDA, SHOULDA... PLAYED THAT PART, which played to a packed house at Orange County's Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa this past Friday, September 9. For her one-night-only return to the OC (part of the Center's 30th Anniversary offerings), Ms. LuPone was armed with a songbook of both showtunes she wishes she would have sung on Broadway and showtunes she herself made famous. Hauser Wirth & Schimmel to Present First-Ever Los Angeles Exhibition for MARIA LASSNIG, 9/16
by BWW News Desk - Aug 30, 2016

Beginning 16 September 2016, Hauser Wirth & Schimmel is pleased to present 'Maria Lassnig. A Painting Survey, 1950 – 2007,' the first Los Angeles solo exhibition for the acclaimed late Austrian artist. Spanning work made from the 1950s to the end of the artist's life, this survey traces Lassnig's evolution from early experiments with abstraction to a richly inventive figuration and the refinement of her 'body awareness' paintings, in which she captured physical sensation as felt from within. Lassnig devoted much of her career to recording her physiological states through a direct and unflinching style, believing that 'truth resides in the emotions produced within the physical shell.' Pursuing her extraordinary science of the self, Lassnig rendered an oeuvre that has influenced such important younger artists as Martin Kippenberger and Paul McCarthy. (more...)

BWW Review: Joey Hood Delivers a Breathtaking Tour de Force Performance in W
by Frank Benge - Aug 23, 2016

W is a new play that is a translation of Woyzeck which was written by Georg Buchner. This new translation by John Hood has been adapted by Zachary Christman. Buchner's original work remained incomplete at the time of his death. It has been posthumously 'finished' by multiple authors, editors and translators. Woyzeck is one of the most performed and influential plays in German theatre. It is believed Buchner began writing the play in 1836 and it remained in a fragmentary state when he died in 1837. Woyzeck was first published in 1879, some 42 years later, in a heavily reworked version by Karl Emil Franzos. It would be another 34 years before the play was first performed on November 8, 1913 at the Residenztheater in Munich. Considered both naturalistic and expressionistic in tone, it is loosely based on the true story of Johann Christian Woyzeck, a Leipzig wigmaker who later became a soldier. In 1821, Woyzeck murdered Christiane Woost, a widow with whom he had been living, in a jealous rage. He was later publicly beheaded. (more...)
