May 4 marks the 50th anniversary of the shootings at Kent State University, one of the most tragic events in the history of anti-Vietnam War protests, when four unarmed students were killed by the National Guard. To commemorate this occasion, theaters around the country will live-stream locally produced Zoom performances of Rich Orloff's DAYS OF POSSIBILITIES, a documentary-style play based on true stories of Vietnam-era college students.

Capturing the Best Actor award from the 2017 United Solo Festival, this highly entertaining work also demonstrates how WWII helped Fisher win boyhood battles with his older brother.

From June 18 through September 3, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is open until 9 pm for Summer Tuesdays, offering music and refreshments in the museum rotunda in addition to exhibitions on view in the galleries. Films, conversations, and performances enhance opportunities for visitors to engage with the museum and the Frank Lloyd Wright designed building that celebrates 60 years as an architectural icon in 2019. Also starting in June, Summer of Know, a conversation series addressing urgent issues through the generative lens of art, returns to the Guggenheim, featuring artists, activists, and other professionals discussing topics such as LGBTQIA+ rights in a global context, environmental activism, and housing rights. I had the pleasure of seeing A Bronx Tale with my friend Cassy, who had NEVER seen a musical before! (I know, right?!) I invited Cassy because the 1993 movie, off which the musical is based, is her favorite. Seriously, her cat is named Calogero, after the lead character in both the movie and the play. I was excited to see this show, and especially excited to see it through the eyes of a neophyte theater goer. I was not disappointed!

A household name since 1989 when she starred in Miss Saigon, Lea Salonga returns to The Soraya on May 22 and 23 after her sold-out debut in 2016.  Recognized throughout the world for her powerful voice and perfect pitch, she will perform her Broadway hits, Disney film favorites, and an exciting array of pop and musical theatre standards as well as selections from her latest album.

J's Cultural Arts Theatre presents John Bishop's THE MUSICAL COMEDY MURDERS OF 1940, the fifth & last production of the inaugural season of the new Alan & Diane Lieberman Theater & the JCAT's 12th season, at the Feldenkreis/Hanono Cultural Center at the Michael-Ann Russell JCC/Sanford L. Ziff Campus in North Miami Beach, Florida. Running from May 7-19, 2019, THE MUSICAL COMEDY MURDERS OF 1940 is directed by John Ferry, with Lighting Design by Zachary Pitchman, Costume Design by Carole Barou-Mootoo. Next up for Cleveland's Theatre in the Circle is an innovative new production of the much-loved classic You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown!, the 1967 musical with music and lyrics by Clark Gesner based on the characters created by Charles M. Schulz in the comic strip Peanuts.

The North American tour of A BRONX TALE doo-wops its way into the Citizens Bank Opera House through April 14th as part of the 2018-2019 Lexus Broadway In Boston Season. It is at once a nostalgic stroll down memory lane with an original rock 'n' roll score, a gritty depiction of urban turf wars, and a well-told story about loyalty, love, and family. Based on Chazz Palminteri's 1989 one-man Off-Broadway play that inspired a 1993 film, the musical reunites the author with his directors, Jerry Zaks and Robert DeNiro, and they are joined by composer Alan Menken, lyricist Glenn Sater, and choreographer Sergio Trujillo. Like other musicals that have come before it (HAIRSPRAY, JERSEY BOYS, WEST SIDE STORY, to mention a few), A BRONX TALE feels familiar as it evokes a time, a place, and a genre that we recognize. It is a good, solid show with great music, performances, and design elements that provides a couple of hours of entertainment and escape.

Next up for Cleveland's Theatre in the Circle is an innovative new production of the much-loved classic You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown!, the 1967 musical with music and lyrics by Clark Gesner based on the characters created by Charles M. Schulz in the comic strip Peanuts. This production features an over-50 cast of acclaimed Cleveland area theatre professionals. You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown! runs May 9 through 12th, 2019, with all shows taking place at Judson Manor, 1890 E. 107th Street. Save the Pedestals, a unique, international, artistic collaboration between the Baxter Theatre Centre, Handspring Puppet Company and Halle Puppet Theatre, makes its African debut at the Baxter Flipside, for four performances only, from 28 to 30 March, at 8pm, with a matinee on Saturday, 30 March at 4pm. This follows its hugely successful world premiere in Halle, Germany, last year.
