BWW Review: Musical Theatre West Salutes Old-Fashioned YANKEE DOODLE DANDY
by Michael Quintos - Jul 12, 2018

George M. Cohan has been attributed to being the father of the American Musical, whose works are the very roots of Broadway and musical theater that we know today. Without his numerous contributions to the American theater, Broadway as we all know it probably wouldn't even exist. This is the idea that's drummed rather loudly and patriotically by the ending of YANKEE DOODLE DANDY, the 2004 stage musical now in the midst of its Southern California regional premiere via Musical Theatre West. A fairly entertaining, if inescapably old-fashioned jukebox musical that paints rather broad strokes rather than giving a deep dive into Cohan's life story, this new production continues performances at the Carpenter Center for the Performing Arts in Long Beach through July 22, 2018.

BWW Review: THE 1940'S RADIO HOUR at The Players Centre For Performing Arts
by Carolan Trbovich - Dec 17, 2017

Playing through December 23 at The Players Centre is The 1940's Radio Hour, A Prairie Home Companion-type production that takes us back to the good ole days of radio, where voices and sound effects allowed your mind to wander and create a world only you could envision. Although film and television have taken that away from us and replaced it with stunning visual effects, I still like to listen to the old radio shows, especially the mysteries. This production makes you feel comfy cozy as if you were home listening, all warm and bundled up, while it snows outside.

BWW Review: HOLD THESE TRUTHS: Past is Prologue
by Nancy Grossman - Dec 8, 2017

HOLD THESE TRUTHS blends historical fact with fiction to tell Gordon Hirabayashi's compelling story of standing up for his constitutional rights when he was ordered to report to an internment camp only months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The events of the past echo loudly today and there is much to be learned about resistance and persistence from the actions of this patriot.
