The Next Fifty Announces BRUISE Exhibition

As a part of The Next Fifty Art, Culture and Design series, Lisa Hein and Robert Seng present BRUISE, a process oriented artwork constructed in the form of a growing Jello brick wall. The brightly colored piece will be open for viewing 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. daily, Aug. 20 – Sept. 9, on Next 50 Plaza.

To create BRUISE, the artists boil and cast the Jello on site and mortar the resulting bricks into a structure that continues to grow for several weeks. As the piece is constructed, the decaying horizon of Jello grows to resemble staiNed Glass.

Seng explained, "When we start building this project, the Jello holds up the mortar. Next day, the mortar holds up the Jello. By the end of the process, mortar is all that's left. It's like a lace wall."

"I never was a painter, but I love the mural scale, and how mold and heat create all the signs of grotty authenticity my own hand never could," said Hein.

The purple wall of EMP Museum that Hein and Seng thought looked like Jello was the inspiration for BRUISE. The museum's architect, Frank Gehry, visited the artists' first Jello project in New York. BRUISE is their tribute in return.

Lisa Hein and Robert Seng have collaborated on over 30 site projects since 1996. The Brooklyn-based artists are known for the wry humor and technical range of their temporary installations. The New Yorker describes their work as "… a vernacular that is both bummed out and entertaining, intense and blasé … another force to be reckoned with in this genre."

BRUISE will be on display on the Next 50 Plaza at Seattle Center from Aug. 20 through Sept. 9 and is sure to be an exciting piece to witness.
