The singers are out of breath. The swimmers are out of their depth. At sunrise and sunset, for three days only, a captivating spectacle will emerge on Edinburgh's Portobello beach. Singers and swimmers strike out towards the water's edge looking out intently, searching the horizon. Is somebody lost at sea? Stories of endeavour are interwoven with haunting music, lifeguard drills, calls for help and struggles for breath.

Out of Water features an original score from award-winning composer Jocelyn Pook and the live solo voice of million sellinginternationally acclaimed soprano Laura Wright.

Rooted in its watery beach landscape, Out of Water takes its audience on a poetic journey from land to the water's edge, examining family and memory, what we pass from generation to generation; looking at mortality and survival.

In all a total of 40 performers, including a locally recruited choir, span the beach taking the audience with them for an evocative journey using visual theatre, sound, song and performance to create a richly layered work. Combining a pre-recorded broadcast and live sound, the earphone wearing audience simultaneously experience elements of the soundtrack both privately and collectively.

Out of Water was originally commissioned by Live Art Collective East for London 2012 and has previously performed at Norfolk's Holkham Beach and San Francisco's Fort Funston beach. See a short film from Holkham here: http://tiny.cc/zv6lex

Caroline Wright is an artist based in the East of England who has been making work nationally and internationally for the past eleven years. Her practice spans visual and performance work that is often socially engaged and site-specific, taking place on beaches, in swimming pools, beach-huts, observation towers and uninhabited islands.

Helen Paris is an award winning artist and writer who has been making performance work for twenty years and is co-artistic director of Curious. She is Professor of performance making at Stanford University California. Her work has toured extensively in the UK and internationally, including Sydney, Taipei and Shanghai.

Perhaps best known for her score for Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut, Jocelyn Pook is one of UK's most versatile composers, having written extensively for stage, screen, opera house and concert hall.

Laura Wright is one of the biggest selling classical artists this decade with over a million album sales under her belt. She recorded the Queen's Diamond Jubilee song Stronger As One and is the England Rugby team's official anthem singer.
Out of Water has been selected for Escalator East To Edinburgh. Each year Escalator East to Edinburgh helps artists and arts organisations to raise their profile and perform to new audiences as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
