2010 Tony Award-winning Play RED Premieres in the Philippines Tonight

Joaquin Pedro Valdes and Bart Guingona star in Actor's Actors Inc. - The Necessary Theatre's Philippine premiere of Tony Award-winning play RED

Manila, Philippines, January 27, 2013 -- American playwright and screenwriter John Logan's ("Any Given Sunday," "Aviator") Tony Award-winning play "Red," which won six awards at the 2010 Tony Awards, including Best Play, and Best Featured Actor in a Play for Eddie Redmayne, best known as the actor who played Marius in the Oscar-nominated film "Les Miserables," will run at College of Saint Benilde-School of Design and Arts (CSB-SDA) Theatre for four days only, tonight, February 22-23 and March 1-2.

"Red," produced by Actor's Actors Inc.'s The Necessary Theatre, stars veteran stage actor and director Bart Guingona ("Next Fall," "Hedda Gabler") and filmmaker and thespian Joaquin Pedro Valdes ("Dagim," "Into the Woods").

"Red" is a bio-drama about Mark Rothko (1903-1970), an American abstract painter of Jewish descent.

In the late '50s, Rothko (Guingona; Alfred Molina on Broadway) is in Bowery, New York painting murals for the elite Four Seasons restaurant. Rothko gives orders to his fictional assistant, Ken (Valdes; Redmayne on Broadway), as Rothko mixes the paints, makes the frames, and paints the canvases.

Ken brashly questions Rothko's theories of art, and the painter's acceptance of commercial projects.

"[RED] unfolds as a combative Socratic dialogue between teacher and pupil, a master class of questions and answers about the methods and purpose of Rothko's art. 'I am not your teacher,' Rothko says, shortly after meeting Ken. But he sure sounds like it," wrote Ben Brantley, the chief critic of The New York Times.

The play "turns out to be more a study in artist appreciation, a portrait of an angry and brilliant mind that asks you to feel the shape and texture of thoughts," Brantley added.
