2014 SOLO COLLECTIVE to Feature THE STORYTELLER and More; Runs 9/7-28

After a wildly successful first year, Paul Stein and THE SOLO COLLECTIVE (L.A.'s only Solo Collective company) in residence at VS. THEATRE COMPANY is thrilled to announce its second annual SOLO COLLECTIVE, with three solo shows performing this Fall: Opening with the World Premiere of Antonio Sacre's THE STORYTELLER; a special return engagement of Drew Droege's BRIGHT PATTERNS AND BOLD COLORS and closing with the world premiere of Carla Cackowski's GAL INVINCIBLE. Antonio Sacre in THE STORYTELLER, directed by Paul Stein, will preview on Sunday, September 7 and will open on Friday, September 12 at 8pm and run through Sunday, September 28 at the new home of VS. Stew, Nancy Giles, Ted Keegan & More Set for SUPPER AT THE SALON at Dixon Place, 9/15

Dixon Place, Ellie Covan, founder and artistic director, proudly announces SUPPER AT THE SALON, a special evening of dinner and entertainment which will take place on the mainstage theater at Dixon Place on Monday, September 15th, with cocktails beginning in the lounge at 6:30 PM. The evening will include performances by Stew (Passing Strange), Nancy Giles ('CBS Sunday Morning'), Broadway's Ted Keegan (Phantom of the Opera, Cyrano, Camelot), award-winning aerial troupe LAVA, and more to be announced, and will be hosted by Bindlestiff Family Cirkus founder, Keith Nelson. Also that evening, four honorees will receive the iconic Dixon Place mini chair award for their contributions to the arts and support of Dixon Place: award winning actor-writer Peggy Shaw; The Jerome Foundation, celebrating its 50th Anniversary; Dixon Place Board member Eric Jensen, and theater supporter Yoshiko Kakuga. Symphony Space has announced that Andrew Byrne will be joining Symphony Space as Artistic Director on September 15, 2014. Australian-born Byrne moved to New York in the 90s on a Fulbright Scholarship to study for a doctorate in music at Columbia University. He is assuming this leadership role after 10 years at Carnegie Hall, 8 of which were spent as Director of Festivals and Special Projects. (more...)

WITNESS UGANDA Creators to Perform in Weston Playhouse Benefit Concert, 8/31

When Griffin Matthews, a young black American from New York City, ventured to Uganda in 2005 to help build a village school, he had no idea what a life-changing journey it would be. His six-week experience, in the company of a group of orphaned teenagers compelled the young writer/director/actor to want to do something to improve their quality of life. First he formed a non-profit aid organization, the Uganda Project, and later, after returning to the village year after year, Matthews, in a collaboration with Matt Gould, wrote the award-winning musical Witness Uganda which has brought new funding to the project. Having its world premiere at the American Repertory Theater earlier this year, the two men will perform a concert version of the musical at a Sunday, August 31st special Weston Playhouse event. Julian Fleisher Sets Fall Shows in New York

Julian Fleisher, New York City's favorite multi-hyphenate, will return to Joe's Pub this fall in support of his recently released album, Finally. The 10-track album was written and produced by Julian and follows his critically acclaimed Rather Bigalbum. Julian will be mixing material from both of his releases when he hits the stage, once again, at Joe's Pub on September 17. Julian was also asked to host a conversation series with his father, the legendary pianist and Kennedy Center honoree Leon Fleisher at the 92nd St Y this fall. The series includes three intimate conversations with the master, the first taking place on October 26, the second on December 14 and the final conversation will take place on February 8, 2015. The series will explore the elder Fleisher's life and career throug the lens of the music he loves. (more...)

Brown & Dancers (CAB&D), recognized for its visceral movement and unflinching approach to comedic and controversial themes, announces Black Girl Spectrum, a multi-faceted community engagement initiative. The new yearlong initiative, lead by Bessie-nominated choreographer Camille A. Brown, uses dance as a means to address civic, educational, and economic struggle through cultural and creative empowerment. Aimed to explore the spectrum of identities among African American females, the initiative will also serve as participatory research to mold and inform Brown's new work-in-progress, Black Girl (working title), which is slated to premiere in September 2015.
