Let's first get this very necessary accolade out of the way: South Coast Repertory's brand new production of Rick Elice's PETER AND THE STARCATCHER is, hands down, one of the most enjoyable, most thrilling, and most engagingly imaginative plays I have seen all season---a fitting capper to the Tony Award-winning Orange County theater's 51st year. This delightfully revised production---which continues performances in Costa Mesa through June 7---re-calibrates the play's hyperactive mixture of mirth and mayhem by further emphasizing its seemingly 'bare-bones' storytelling devices, resulting in one entertaining night of theater that both kids and adults will find endearingly beguiling. Motivated by imagination, I seriously cannot recall the last time I laughed this boisterously and had this much unabashed joy from sitting through a play in quite some time. (more...)

Powell III, director, and Franklin Kelly, deputy director and chief curator, National Gallery of Art, announced today that 6,430 works of art have been selected initially from more than 17,000 Corcoran works in the Gallery's custody to join the nation's collection of European and American art. As curators continue to review the collection of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the newly accessioned objects will have an immediate impact across NGA's collections and will be particularly transformative for its holdings of American art in all media. Investigators at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research have made a medical breakthrough using 3D printing on a MakerBot Replicator 2X Experimental 3D Printer to create cartilage designed for tracheal repair or replacement. The results were reported today at the 51st Annual Meeting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons in San Diego, in a presentation by Todd Goldstein, an investigator at the Feinstein Institute, part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System. This is a first for medical research where regular MakerBot PLA Filament was used to 3D print a custom tracheal scaffolding, which was combined with living cells to create a tracheal segment. Under this task order, ICF will continue to support SAMHSA's Center for Mental Health Services' Suicide Prevention Branch in evaluating its suicide prevention programs on a national level. Specifically, ICF will support the design, implementation and dissemination of findings for two of its largest funded programs: the Garrett Lee Smith Youth Suicide Prevention and Early Intervention Program, which targets youths and young adults ages 10-24 in states, tribes and territories and on college campuses; and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline crisis hotline program. In addition, ICF will support evaluation capacity building and infrastructure development around one of the agency's newest suicide prevention programs, Native Connections, which is designed to prevent and reduce suicidal behavior and substance abuse and promote mental health among American Indian/Alaska Native populations.
