Roundabout Theatre Company (Todd Haimes, Artistic Director) and Columbia University School of the Arts (Carol Becker, Dean of Faculty) have just announced Columbia@Roundabout, an initiative aimed at educating and developing the next generation of playwrights and theatre administrators, as both institutions celebrate their 50th anniversaries. No other collaborative partnership in the New York area brings together an esteemed Ivy League MFA program with a Tony Award- winning not-for-profit theatre. Academy Award nominee Clive Owen (Closer) makes his Broadway debut alongside Tony Award nominee Eve Best (The Homecoming) and Kelly Reilly ('True Detective'), also making her Broadway debut, in Old Times, written by Nobel Laureate Harold Pinter. Thom Yorke, singer and principal songwriter for Radiohead, provides incidental music. Tony Award winner Douglas Hodge (La Cage aux Folles, Roundabout's Cyrano de Bergerac), a frequent performer and director of Pinter's works, directs Roundabout Theatre Company's provocative revival of the haunting and passionate play, which has not been seen on Broadway in over 40 years. '[Thank you] to an incredible cast of British and American actors who make the Atlantic look like a little creek you can just kind of pop across,' said Dame Helen Mirren upon receiving her 2015 Tony Award. The stage and screen star reprised her critically-acclaimed performance in THE AUDIENCE after a West End run in 2013, and she was just one of many to 'pop across' an ocean for a stab at Broadway. An unprecedented amount of British talent took over Broadway last year, bringing us such productions as THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME, WOLF HALL: PARTS 1 & 2, and SKYLIGHT.
It doesn't seem like the trend is ending anytime soon.
This fall, Broadway will welcome a slew of British actors- some of whom will be making their US stage debuts in incoming productions. And it's not just performers. The Old Vic presents Bertie Carvel in Richard Jones' new production of THE HAIRY APE, the second production in Matthew Warchus' opening season as Artistic Director.
