Previews begin Sunday, May 1, at 7:30pm for Theatre for a New Audience's production of August Strindberg's The Father in a new version by Scottish author David Greig commissioned by Theatre for a New Audience and Tuesday, May 10, at 7:30pm for A Doll's House in an adaptation by Thornton Wilder not seen in New York since its Broadway premiere in 1937.  The plays, both directed by Arin Arbus, Associate Artistic Director of Theatre for a New Audience, feature Maggie Lacey as Nora in A Doll's House and as Laura in The Father and John Douglas Thompson as Thorwald in A Doll's House and the Captain in The Father. Theatre for a New Audience announces that as part of its 2016-2017 season at Polonsky Shakespeare Center, Golden Globe Award winner Oscar Isaac will play the title role in Hamlet staged by Sam Gold.  Oscar Isaac and Sam Gold last worked together on Zoe Kazan's We Live Here in 2011.Hamlet is their first collaboration on Shakespeare and their first production with Theatre for a New Audience. Hamlet will begin previews on June 4, 2017 for an opening June 22 and run through July 30. Sheffield Theatres today announces the appointment of Robert Hastie as the company's new Artistic Director. Hastie takes up the position in July 2016, taking over from Daniel Evans who steps down as Artistic Director at the end of June to join Chichester Festival Theatre. This appointment sees Hastie return to Sheffield Theatres, where he began his professional theatre career as an actor in Edward Bond's Lear in 2005. (more...)

The Royal Court has worked with a group of 12 writers from Syria and Lebanon over the last two years with workshops supported by the British Council in Broumana and Beirut. These workshops have been led by playwrights David Greig, Sam Holcroft and Royal Court International Director Elyse Dodgson. Georges Bigot, an iconic figure with Ariane Mnouchkine's Theatre du Soleil 25 years ago and one of the most lauded stage actors of his time, is in Chicago to conduct a three-week workshop with American actors and dramaturgs. The workshop is working towards a production next year to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death - although Bigot prefers to think of 2016 as the 456th anniversary of the poet's birth. Details of the "what" and "where" of the production has yet to be settled, but it's safe to say that when the production happens, it won't be Shakespeare as usual. (more...)
