BWW Review: Park Square Theatre's THE SNOW QUEEN is Magical, Musical, Innovative Storytelling at its BestBWW Review: Park Square Theatre's THE SNOW QUEEN is Magical, Musical, Innovative Storytelling at its Best
by Jill Schafer - Dec 8, 2015

Inside Park Square Theatre on 7th Place in lovely downtown St. Paul, magic is happening. It's the magic of storytelling, something that has been happening for ages on this planet. Friends sitting around a campfire, telling stories of good and evil, trials, and friendship, with words, music, dance, puppets, tears, and laughter. This musical adaptation of the Hans Christian Anderson story THE SNOW QUEEN is something truly unique and special. It's so charming, whimsical, funny, creative, and yes, magical. But with a creative team that includes Doug Scholz-Carlson (director), Denise Prosek (music director), and Jim Lichtsheidl (choreographer), I would expect nothing less. They have assembled a terrific eight-person cast of actor/singer/ musicians to bring this charming fairy tale to life in an innovative and inspired way. (more...)

FrenetiCore Dance's THE SNOW QUEEN is currently being performed at Frenetic Theatre in Houston. The show is a family friendly dance narrative about true friendship and the journey to find true love. The show, which is being funded in part by a City's Initiative Grant from Houston Arts Alliance, opened last weekend and will run for three more performances this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, December 10, 11, and 12 at 7:30pm. Described as “An Afternoon of Famous Duets,” Saturday's Urban Stages Winter Rhythms presentation (Day Four of the 11-day, 20-show festival) was unexpectedly sweeping in its approach, covering duos that sang pop, folk, jazz, Great American Songbook, and musical theater tunes. With veteran cabaret singer Sue Matsuki serving as producer and host, and Musical Director Gregory Toroian on piano, the show encompassed both the predictable and the surprising and was a genuine pleasure. BWW Commentary: With Return of His RUSSIANS Show As a Greatest Hit and Going CRAZY On New PBS Series, MARK NADLER is Making Cabaret History His WayBWW Commentary: With Return of His RUSSIANS Show As a Greatest Hit and Going CRAZY On New PBS Series, MARK NADLER is Making Cabaret History His Way
by Peter Napolitano - Oct 5, 2015

This week, Mark Nadler made his solo television debut on WNET (New York/13) and WLIW (Long Island/21) in the latest installment of the new Public Television series 66th & Broadway (photo below). My friends, in the contemporary cabaret world, this is a BIG DEAL. Let's face it: When 100 people show up to a show on the same night it is an event, so the possibility of thousands (or--dare we dream--millions) of people watching Mr. Nadler perform in the comfort of their homes is beyond exciting. It is Cabaret Nirvana, Shangri-La, and Xanadu combined, the kind of exposure a cabaret artist dreams about but rarely receives. (more...)

BWW Review: Beautifully Staged BAKER'S WIFE at Actors Co-opBWW Review: Beautifully Staged BAKER'S WIFE at Actors Co-op
by Don Grigware - Sep 20, 2015

One of Stephen Schwartz's failures The Baker's Wife, which toured extensively across the US in 1976 but never made it to Broadway, had a cast recording with Patti LuPone, Paul Sorvino and Teri Ralston and has had a few revivals including the UK. Why did it bomb? It's a simple, sweet show with a lovely message about human connection and a few pretty ballads, especially the hit 'Meadowlark', but there's a spark missing, nothing really exciting to get people into the seats; it's most definitely not commercial enough for Broadway. Based on the 1938 French film La Femme du Boulanger, that may be the main reason that the show is rarely performed. Now onstage at Actors co-op, Baker's Wife is mounted scrumptiously with terrific direction from Richard Israel and a superlatively cast ensemble. (more...)
