Highlighting the run of performances are two major collaborations: first, a new work, Shadow of Sound, commissioned from acclaimed Taiwanese choreographer Huang Yi to be performed by a dual cast of Nimbus company dancers and Taiwanese guest artists. Second, Nimbus partners with the Charles Weidman Dance Foundation to present Weidman's seminal 1936 modern dance work Lynchtown, to be performed alongside a new thematically-linked work, We Acquiesce by Nimbus Artistic Director Samuel Pott with new music to be performed live by Peter James Saleh. Nimbus Dance Works' 9th Season begins with a tour of the Northeastern US culminating in the company's New York City season at the Alvin Ailey Citigroup Theater on February 15-17. Highlighting the run of performances are two major collaborations: first, a new work commissioned from acclaimed Taiwanese choreographer Huang Yi to be performed by a dual cast of Nimbus company dancers and Taiwanese guest artists. Second, Nimbus partners with the Charles Weidman Dance Foundation to present Weidman's seminal 1936 modern dance work Lynchtown, to be performed alongside a new thematically-linked work by Nimbus Artistic Director Samuel Pott. Additional works to be performed include: Pedro Ruiz's electrifying Danzon (2010) set to a rousing orchestral score by Arturo Marquez, and Scarabs, a work created by Samuel Pott in 2012 in collaboration with Hong Kong composer Samson Young and New York City visual artist Nicola Lopez. New Year's Day afforded me the opportunity to watch four hit Broadway musicals that had been adapted for the screen: My Fair Lady, Camelot, Funny Girl and Hello Dolly. My Fair Lady and Camelot had a number of things in common: same director, lyricist, composer, leading lady, supporting male actor and, most important for me, the same choreographer: Hanya Holm, the modern dancer from Dresden who came to the United states to open a school and stayed for the rest of her life, dying at the age of 99!. Since December 28th was my birthday I looked around for something interesting to write about. And I did. But it happened on December 27, the same day Show Boat opened. But Show Boat opened in 1927 and this one in 1944. It was a musical titled Sing Out Sweet Land. What? Yes, I know that no one remembers it, let alone hearing about it), but after looking at some very impressive credits I saw that Charles Weidman had choreographed the production. (more...)

Nimbus Dance Works announces the third year of its annual holiday tradition: Jersey City Nutcracker. Jersey City Nutcracker tells the story of two children's urban holiday adventure leading them through fantasy, adversity and celebration and teaching them lessons about friendship and community along the way. Choreographed and directed by Nimbus Artistic Director Samuel Pott, this adaption of Tchaikovsky's holiday classic is performed by a stand-out cast of professional dancers from Nimbus Dance Works joined by youth and adults from the community as they portray familiar characters such as the Sugar Plum Fairy, the Rat King, the Arabian Princess and Drosselmeyer - all with a Jersey City twist! Amidst colorful sets, costumes, a brightly adorned tree, youth and adults alike are touched by this tale of Christmas spirit. (more...)

On July 28, 2012 - National Dance Day - the U.S. Postal ServiceŽ will pay tribute to four influential choreog­raphers who changed the art of dance: Isadora Duncan, Jose Limon, Katherine Dunham, and Bob Fosse. Designed to look like posters advertising a performance, the stamp art captures the luminosity and mystery of a live dance per­formance. The stamp design for Isadora Duncan reflects her inter­est in classical Greek dance forms and shows the seem­ingly effortless style that she developed.
