There's something truly divine about THE SOUND OF MUSIC, which has become a pillar of musical theatre for over 56 years. A brand new touring production of this beloved musical waltzed into The Ohio Theatre on Tuesday night starring Kerstin Anderson as Maria, Ben Davis as Captain Von Trapp, and Ashley Brown as The Mother Abbess. Directed by three-time Tony Award winner Jack O'Brien, this spirited and romantic story of Maria and the Von Trapp Family has survived generations of modern day musicals, capturing the hearts of audiences with its nostalgia and charm. BWW Review: THE SOUND OF MUSIC Blends Realism, Romanticism at Dr. Phillips CenterBWW Review: THE SOUND OF MUSIC Blends Realism, Romanticism at Dr. Phillips Center
by Matt Tamanini - Jan 6, 2016

There is something both familiar and jarring about the brand new North American tour of THE SOUND OF MUSIC, running at Orlando's Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts through Sunday, January 10th. While the beloved musical about a nun turned governess still has all of the iconic songs by Richard Rodgers (music) and Oscar Hammerstein II (lyrics), including 'My Favorite Things,' 'Do-Re-Mi (complete with solfege hand signs),' and the title song, this production focuses more intently on the real-world danger that the Trapp family faced leading up to the outbreak of World War II. by Matt Tamanini - Jan 5, 2016

When the glorious national tour of the beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein musical THE SOUND OF MUSIC sets up shop at Orlando's Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts tonight, it will be a homecoming of sorts for one of the show's leading ladies. Though Teri Hansen, who plays the Baroness Elsa Schraeder, is a native of Detroit, after earning her degree in Opera at Florida State, she spent a year as an artist in residence with the now closed Orlando Opera. BWW Review: THE SOUND OF MUSIC at Music Hall At Fair ParkBWW Review: THE SOUND OF MUSIC at Music Hall At Fair Park
by Kyle West - Nov 6, 2015

I think it's safe to say that everyone, by now, has heard that the hills are alive with THE SOUND OF MUSIC. The Broadway musical, which starred Mary Martin in 1959 (and Julie Andrews on film six years later), is easily one of the most familiar titles in the musical theater catalog. With family audiences fawning over more contemporary classics like WICKED, THE LION KING and MATILDA, bringing back an old chestnut comes with a risk. (more...)

BWW Interview: Ashley Brown of THE SOUND OF MUSIC at Music Hall At Fair ParkBWW Interview: Ashley Brown of THE SOUND OF MUSIC at Music Hall At Fair Park
by Kyle West - Nov 2, 2015

Ashley Brown is no stranger to the stage, having originated the role of MARY POPPINS in New York City after making her Broadway debut in BEAUTY AND THE BEAST a few years earlier. Ashley is also no stranger to Dallas, as she is returning to town after recently being here for an engagement with the Dallas Symphony, not to mention a visit to Music Hall at Fair Park with the MARY POPPINS national tour several years ago. In addition, Ashley is not quite a stranger to me, as we have a quirky New York connection! Almost a decade ago, I briefly held a management position at Broadway's New Amsterdam Theatre, where I'd leave Ashley a case of water in her dressing room weekly. I recently had the chance to catch up on Ashley's new adventure in THE SOUND OF MUSIC playing a role she wasn't sure she was ready for! Check out our conversation below. (more...)

BWW Review: Vibrant New SOUND OF MUSIC Opens at the AhmansonBWW Review: Vibrant New SOUND OF MUSIC Opens at the Ahmanson
by Don Grigware - Oct 1, 2015

Perhaps the best known musical of all time Rodgers' and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music has remained a family favorite since the 50s. Number one, the score is to die for; secondly, the book is dramatically fulfilling with a real life family being torn asunder by the ravages of fascism. Touches of real intertwined humor add to the appeal. Under the skillful eye and wisdom of director Jack O'Brien, the new North American touring production is now at the Ahmanson through October and proves thoroughly winning. I wouldn't say there's a totally fresh perspective, but somehow touches of real humanity and love stand out, and the entire ensemble is perfectly cast. (more...)
