Up in East Harlem, Sybille Bruun and Tyler Moss have formed a family and a mission to bring Shakespeare to anyone who wants it... and so much more.
EL COMANCHERO or [The Path to the Kingdom of Heaven] is a surrealistic investigation of the authors' personal experiences as immigrants and friends in the United States.
Filipe Valle Costa is the founder and co-artistic director of the Saudade Theatre, the first and only Portuguese theatre in Los Angeles to translate Portuguese playwrights into English. The company will soon open My Favorite Suicide on October 18.
Filipe, tell our readers about Saudade Theatre. Most importantly, as the first and only Portuguese theatre in the US, how has it made a difference for the Portuguese and our American culture?
FVC: Well, that is the key right there. Saudade Theatre is the first and only Portuguese theatre company in the US, and as such, it's our mission to develop original and thought-provoking work grounded in the Portuguese experience. I never wanted Saudade to be a 'museum' theatre company. In other words, it is not our goal to grow a company that merely presents an American audience with a Portuguese story, or our history straight from the history books. As Portuguese immigrants having
Saudade Theatre, the first Portuguese theatre company in the United States, presents the World Premiere of My Favorite Suicide, written and directed by acclaimed Portuguese playwright Mickaël de Oliveira, in a coproduction with Lisbon-based theatre company Colectivo 84. My Favorite Suicide is an apocalyptic play that pits society and nature against each other, in which one extreme situation is debated in context of another, even more extreme circumstance. Performances of My Favorite Suicide will run from Friday, October 18 through Sunday, November 3, 2019, at 905 Cole Theatre at Anthony Meindl's Actor Workshop in Hollywood, CA. Valle Costa's theatre company, Saudade Theatre, will bring Mickael de Oliveira's The Constitution to Los Angeles for a limited three-week run, starting October 26, 2018. The cast will feature Juan Javier Cardenas (FX's Snowfall, USA's Shooter, CBS' NCIS: Los Angeles), Adriana DeGirolami ( FX's Snowfall, Showtime's Nurse Jackie), Cristian Gonzalez (AMC's Halt and Catch Fire, TNT's Good Behavior), and Rafael Morais (Blood of My Blood).
Picture four people in a room, possessing just short of enough free will to be there but knowing that they can walk out if the mood strikes them. Four actors who base their lives on the truth of the untruth, forced to write a constitution applicable to all the actual people they have played - people who rely on their logic and experience to shape a universally "good" future. Four souls trapped in a room, compelled enough by the attraction of love to write a new Constitution based upon it. Six days are all they have to write something with no boundaries, no rules and no expectations. Shouldn't be too difficult, right?
