March 6, 2017 - New York, NY: The Anthropologists return hot off a successful run of No Man's Land to honor the the centennial of the 1917 Lower East Side food riots with a special Concert Reading of their original 2009 play Give Us Bread on Sunday, March 19 at 2PM at the University Settlement (184 Eldridge Street at the corner of Rivington, New York, NY 10002). The performance will feature the entire original cast who contributed to research and devising of the play. The performance will be followed by a conversation with the family of Marie Ganz. This will also be a Benefit for the company, who will premiere its newest work, This Sinking Island, at the University Settlement in Fall 2017. Tickets are $35 ($40 at the door).

Give Us Bread brings to life the little-known stories of immigrant women on the Lower East Side who banded together to lead an uprising and feed their families. One hundred years before the Women’s March, these "everyday housewives" provide a lens with which to examine current-day politics, social conditions and today’s global food system. Give Us Bread offers an important reminder from the past that the voice of the people, united, has power to inspire change.
Meticulously researched from Yiddish newspapers to cookbooks to Jewish anarchist Marie Ganz’s memoir and other firsthand accounts, The Anthropologists’ play (originally produced in 2009) was hailed by nytheatre.com as “a thoroughly entertaining and thought provoking play mixing elements of dance and stylized movement to create a piece that is wholly within its own hybrid Anthropologists genre.” Founding Artistic Director Melissa Moschitto will be rejoined by the original cast. The Anthropologists are thrilled to be sharing this remarkable history with a new audience at the doorstep of these historical events.
