Soulographie: Our Genocides

Soulographie: Our Genocides, a cycle of 17 powerful plays by Erik Ehn that theatrically explores the causes, effects, and various forms that genocide has taken in the 20th century, will be presented at La MaMa, November 10-18. Ranging in length from 20 minutes to two hours, the plays, which are currently being produced by theater companies across the United States, Poland, and Uganda, take various forms ranging from Bunraku to Noh to documentary to dreamscapes. The performance dates of the plays will be determined by their length and subject matter. Plans are underway for a marathon during which all the plays will be performed over a 24-hour period. Dood Paard, one of Holland’s leading and spunkiest theater companies, will present STOCK XENOPHOBIA, a group of three award-winning plays: FREETOWN, Othello (bye bye), and
ANSWER ME, each of which examines the dangers of xenophobia in a unique way. With a name that turns heads (in English Dood Paard means dead horse), the 18-year-old Amsterdam-based collective has no director, dramaturge or set designer, so that all artistic decisions are made by its members.

One of Europe’s most controversial and celebrated artists, Romeo Castellucci, and his Italian theater company, Societas Raffaello Sanzio, return to Peak Performances, February 14-17, with one of the director’s most hotly argued about works to date, On the Concept of the Face, Regarding the Son of God. The story of a son morally compelled to care for his aging, incontinent father who has lost all control of his bowels, the play takes place on an antiseptically white stage with a huge portrait of an enigmatically smiling Christ hanging behind the couch. Graphic in its smell and smearing use of excrement, Castellucci’s newest work challenges the audience not to turn its eyes from its riveting and complex subject matter: shame, degradation, duty, and love. A U.S. premiere, On the Concept of the Face, Regarding the Son of God has already been seen at Barbican in London, the Chekhov InterNational Theatre Festival in Moscow, Festival d’Avignon in France, The?a?tre de la Ville in Paris, among other major international venues.
