Nano: The Science of the Super Small

Nano is an interactive exhibition that engages family audiences in nano-scale science, engineering, and technology. Hands-on stations allow visitors to play with magnets, use foam construction materials and balance blocks all while learning the basics of nanoscience and engineering, introducing some real world applications, and exploring the societal implications of this new technology. Nano will be on view through July 13, 2014.

Fluorescent Mineral Collection

In the Rock and Mineral Gallery, visitors can experience a variety of geological specimens in an interactive, hands-on setting or walk into a dark "cave" in which they can enjoy the fluorescent properties of certain pieces in a specialized light setting. The Morris Museum's geological collection, considered one of the best in New Jersey, is home to numerous specimens from throughout the world, but has a focus on the state's own mineralogical profile.

The Music Workshop

The Music Workshop, part of the permanent exhibition Musical Machines and Living Dolls, is an interactive gallery for the whole family.

  • Explore changes in musical "memory" - hands-on. "Pin" a barrel and "punch" a tune sheet, then listen!
  • Uncover the musical past with the Mechanical Music Jukebox. Listen, from opera to ragtime, or learn to dance a reel, a waltz or a polka.
  • Discover how gears move, play a cylinder music box or pluck the steel teeth of an African mbira with the Activity Boxes.
  • Sit down and play! Delight in the "musical" chair!
  • Explore the evolution of sound, from scratchy records to "hissing" cassette tapes to digital music.
  • Decorate your own fairground organ using magnets.
  • Relax! Have a seat and curl up with a book

Musical Machines and Living Dolls features over 150 objects from the world-renowned Murtogh D. Guinness collection of mechanical musical instruments and automata. Largely dating to the 19th century, these ingenious objects once brought animated, musical entertainment to private settings and public places.
