The hilarious, Tony-winning Broadway musical hit Monty Python's Spamalot with book and lyrics by Eric Idle and music by John Du Prez and Eric Idle, makes its South Jersey premiere exclusively at the Grand Theatre in Williamstown.

The show retells the tale of King Arthur and his Knights' quest for the Holy Grail, but diverts a bit from the legend with such oddities as a bevy of beautiful show girls, a flatulent Frenchman, naughty Boy Scouts and killer rabbits.

Spamalot runs today, January 16 - February 1, 2014 (Thursdays at 7pm; Friday and Saturdays at 8pm; Sundays at 2pm) and tickets range from $22-$25 with discounts for seniors, students and groups. Performances are in the Grand Theatre, located at 405 S. Main Street, Williamstown, NJ. Tickets are available at www.roadcompany.com or 856-728-2120.

Monty Python's Spamalot is a comedic musical that is "lovingly ripped-off" from the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975). Like the film, it follows a non-traditional and highly surreal strand of humor, though at its core can be considered a very silly mockery of the Arthurian legend, specifically the well-known story of Arthur and the Round Table. Spamalot differs from the film in many ways, but especially in its parodies of Broadway theater itself.

The basic story follows King Arthur as he journeys to find the Holy Grail. While traveling with his servant Patsy, Arthur recruits severAl Knights to accompany him on his quest, including Sir Bedevere the Strangely Flatulent, Sir Lancelot the Brave, Sir Dennis Galahad the Dashingly Handsome, previously just Dennis Galahad, Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-As-Sir-Lancelot, and the aptly named Sir Not-Appearing-in-this-Show. Along the way, they meet the Lady of the Lake and a host of other odd characters, including Prince Herbert, the French Taunter, Tim the Enchanter, the Black Knight and the Knights who say "Ni!"

Monty Python fans will appreciate the many references to the original film and other material in the Python canon, including a line from "The Lumberjack Song", nods to the Ministry of Silly Walks, the Election Night Special and Dead Parrot Sketch routines, a rendition of the song "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" from the film Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979), and the "Finland / Fisch Schlapping Dance" which is a reference to both "The Fish-Slapping Dance" and the song "Finland." The name of the show itself, Spamalot, is actually a reference to the lyrics from "Knights of the Round Table" which was in the original film; the knights of Camelot sing "we dine well here in Camelot, we eat ham and jam and spam alot." The Monty Python obsession with the potted meat originated with a "Monty Python and the Flying Circus" skit in which the word spam is said....a lot.
