Nashville Ballet will present Giselle October 23-25, 2009. The romantic yet tragic story of Giselle has been one of the most popular ballets for over 150 years. After a seven year absence from the Nashville stage, the newly re-staged production will reacquaint Nashville with this romantic classic. This production is accompanied by the Nashville Symphony under the direction of Nashville Ballet Music Director Paul Gambill. Artistic Director Paul Vasterling says, "This production has been reworked by Ballet Masters Tim Yeager and Sharyn Wood to develop the story more effectively and showcase the strength of the company." The role of Giselle demands much of the ballerina both technically and artistically, and will alternate between dancers Christine Rennie and Sadie Harris.

Giselle, a poor country maiden, falls madly in love with a young man, Duke Albrecht, masquerading as a common peasant named Loys. After pledging her love to Loys, Giselle learns of his deception, takes her life and is transformed into a Wili (a female spirit who, jilted before her wedding day, rises from the grave at night and seeks revenge upon men by dancing them to death). When all the Wilis try to dance Duke Albrecht to death, Giselle defends him, saving his life and earning eternal peace. This ballet is the ultimate story of love and forgiveness.
