Distraction Theatre Company and The Red Arrow Gallery present Neil LaBute's The Shape of Things, running September 16-October 1 at the East Nashville gallery.

"Pop-up performances have been all the rage in Nashville," says director Amber Buker. "They're hip and, in today's economy, necessary modes of operation for a wide range of artists from fashion to sculpting. With all of the growth taking place in Nashville, artists are finding themselves with a shortage of space to create.

"This problem is, perhaps, most pronounced in the performing arts such as theatre and dance. In those genres, storage, mirrors, floors, wiring, and sheer architecture play crucial roles in producing performance art. However, necessity is the mother of invention and, in this case, it led to an interesting collaboration between visual and performance artists."

Katie Shaw, host and gallery partner, explains that "I'm passionate about community involvement and using the gallery for events that go outside of our monthly artist openings. We are looking forward to the September pairing with artist Dana Oldfather and her exhibition 'Sugar'!"

The Shape of Things is the sophomore show for Distraction Theatre Company. Director Amber Buker described the choice to seek out a gallery partner, saying The Shape of Things presents really striking opportunities when coupled with visual art.

"This show's themes and setting uniquely position the production to create a dramatic, engrossing environment for our audience. It'll give you something to talk about and, more importantly, something to think about."

Audience members can enjoy a play and an exhibition one evening in East Nashville from September 16 through October 1 at The Red Arrow Gallery (919 Gallatin Ave, Unit 4 Nashville). Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. are Industry Nights (artist entry is pay-what- you-can); Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m.; and Sundays at 7:30 p.m. are pay what-you- can for everyone. Tickets are available at www.squareup.com/store/distraction-theatre-company.
