Surfside Players, Cocoa Beach, is proud to announce its spring musical, CITY OF ANGELS, Winner of the 1990 Tony Award for Best Musical, with music by Cy Coleman (Sweet Charity), lyrics by David Zippel (The Goodbye Girl), and book by Larry Gelbart (M*A*S*H).

In a black-and-white world of shadows and streetlights, hardboiled detective Stone is approached by a wealthy socialite begging him to track down the men who kidnapped her stepdaughter. In the course of his investigation, he is beaten up by thugs and framed for murder, and his past returns to haunt him. This is the grim tale that mystery novelist Stine is adapting into a screenplay in the late 1940s, but egotistical producer-director Buddy Fidler constantly demands rewrites. The stress overwhelms Stine and causes him to seek comfort in an extramarital affair, and as the rewrites destroy the integrity of his work, Stone steps out of the "reel" world to confront Stine. The grittiness of Raymond Chandler-esque detective fiction and film noir alternates with the glitz and glamour of the Golden Age of Hollywood, while swinging jazz numbers and heartbreaking love songs celebrate the Big Band era.
