Cast Aside Productions-Portland, ME's professional musical theater company-is turning the Portland Ballet Studio Theater into an intimate immersive 1930s Berlin nightclub to present CABARET this August 15th-31st.
Based on the novel "Goodbye Berlin" and subsequent play and film "I Am a Camera," Kander and Ebb's 1966 musical CABARET follows American writer Clifford Bradshaw as he visits Berlin and is witness to the rise of Nazi power in his new community, friendships, and favorite nightspot: The Kit Kat Club.
"It's embarrassing how relevant this show is for Americans today." explains Artistic Director David Surkin. "This cautionary tale has been produced by theaters around the globe for 40 years and yet- here we all are."
The creative team has hired an all-female, non-binary, and transgender cast to tell this sexually charged story of fascist resistance and assimilation, by those that experience gendered oppression.
The cast of CABARET features: Suzie Assam, Gloria Franco Bonnin, Barbara Laveault, Rachel Henry, Maggie O'Neill, Whitney Brown, Celeste Green, Mo Nichols, Gwen Stevens, Megan Mayfield, Kate Skerry, and Brooke Cottrell.
In addition to CABARET, Cast Aside will be presenting a vaudeville-style variety show series after performances and during the musical's dark nights. The LIVE FROM THE KIT KAT CLUB series features some of Portland's favorite musicians, drag queens, burlesque acts and radio personalities performing live on stage at "Berlin's Hottest Nightclub".
Cast Aside Productions presents CABARET August 15-31 at the Portland Ballet Studio Theater (517 Forest Ave, Portland, ME). Tickets can be purchased at castasideproductions.com
