A hit of the Hollywood Fringe, the Theatre Unleashed show The Spidey Project is swinging back into action for four more shows at Studio/Stage on July 14, 15, 21 and 22.

In The Spidey Project, nerdy social outcast Peter Parker takes on an alter ego as he attempts to defeat a dastardly collection of terrifying villains and perhaps his biggest nemesis of all...himself.

This critically acclaimed work from Justin Moran (POPE! An Epic Musical) is the stuff of theatre legend. In 2011, a group of writers, actors, and musicians set out to stage a musical parody of the Spider-Man origin story through clear, simple story telling, comedy and character driven theatre. They wanted to do justice to the hero we all know and love without being bogged down with lavish sets or dangerous stunts. The show, the FIRST Spider-Man play, went up for only two performances in New York before swinging into Los Angeles a year later for a sold-out run at Theatre Unleashed.

"At the time, The Spidey Project turned out to be a perfect theatrical event, but over the years, cracks began to appear in the play itself," said Moran, who is also directing. "There were characters I would have liked to flush out a bit more, scenes that I'd liked to have tied together a bit tighter, and moments that asked for songs we didn't have time to write. When Theatre Unleashed started talking about bringing it back my team and I were emphatically on board and Spidey 2.0 was launched."

At this past Fringe, The Spidey Project, now with additional material and new songs, once again sold out its entire run almost immediately, prompting a well-deserved extension.

"We pretty much knew right away we were going to have to extend this show," said TU Artistic Director Jenn Scuderi Crafts. "Beyond how entertaining it is and the amazing writing, singing and performances from the cast, the show is also extremely poignant and resonates with all audiences. Sure enough, as soon as we got into Fringe, it became clear that Spidey wasn't going to stop in June."

The Spidey Project is one of two Theatre Unleashed shows that are coming back for encore performances. Three Can Keep a Secret also comes back for a One Night Only show on July 29.
