On Wednesday, Sept 9, 2009 at 9pm, Upright Cabaret presents An Evening with Camille Saviola (Old School for the New Age: Songs of Love and Loathing), star of Original Broadway Cast of NINE and Ragtime with Legendary L.A. Music Director Gerald Sternbach.
With the end of Summer drawing near, Upright Cabaret and Vermont Restaurant celebrate the number “NINE” and offer guests a little something special on the auspicious date of 09/09/09. Camille Saviola’s many theatrical credits include the original workshop, Broadway production and national tour of the Tony Award-winning musical Nine, and she created the role of Emma Goldman in the original production of Ragtime. Other theatre credits: South Pacific as Bloody Mary (NYC Opera and MUNY Opera), Harvey Fierstein’s Spookhouse, Angry Housewives, Tango Apassionado, Jerry’s Girls (Broadway), her one-woman shows, A Vaudeville and Secrets of the Lava Lamp (Manhattan Theatre Club), Happy Holidays (Pasadena Playhouse, Drama-Logue Award), The Rink (Pasadena Playhouse, Robby Award Nomination), Brecht on Brecht (Odyssey Theatre), The Acid Queen and The Mother in Tommy, Godspell (New York), her stint as a disco diva, “Keep On Shakin’ That Thing”, and that western musical she did with Meatloaf at LaMama. Recently, she played Mama Morton in the Broadway revival of Chicago, co-starred with Chita Rivera in The House of Bernarda Alba at The Mark Taper Forum (LADCC Award, BSW/Garland Award), played Golda Meir in Golda’s Balcony and the title role in Mother Courage and her Children (Theater@Boston Court). Films include Betsy’s Wedding, Last Exit to Brooklyn, Stuart Saves the Family, Broadway Danny Rose, Purple Rose of Cairo, Shadows and Fog, Sunset Park, Mr. Wrong and Nitelife (Cable Ace Award for Best Supporting Actress). TV includes Hope & Gloria, Star Trek: DS9 (Kai Opaka), Friends, Becker, NYPD Blue, Nick, JAG, Some of My Best Friends, ARLI$$, A.U.S.A., Judging Amy, First Monday, and E-Ring. She can currently be seen playing Turtle’s mother in HBO’s hit series Entourage.
Gerald Sternbach - One of LA’s most honored musical directors, he was the resident musical director of REPRISE in Los Angeles for six seasons earning nine Ovation nominations ( finally winning in 2006 for Zorba), in addition to six LA Drama Critics Circle Nominations—( having been presented the 2007 Joel Hirschhorn award for excellence in Los Angeles’ musical theater by this illustrious organization and winning again in 2008 for On Your Toes) and two Garland Awards. He succeeded the late, great Peter Matz (Barbra Streisand’s musical director for many years) serving as his associate for fourteen shows of Reprise’s first five seasons. Jerry dedicates his performance this evening—to his memory. He made his LA Philharmonic debut at the Hollywood Bowl during the summer of ‘05 as on-stage pianist for “Stephen Sondheim’s 75th Birthday – The Concert”, assisting conductor, Paul Gemignani- and where he can actually say he played for Barbra Streisand, who led the audience in singing “Happy Birthday” to Mr. Sondheim. At the Bowl, He also has assisted John Mauceri, rehearsing the summer Bowl musicals The Music Man, My Fair Lady, Mame, and Camelot and one opera La Boheme. Other credits: associate conductor for Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Merlin, and The Tap Dance Kid (all on Broadway), Les Miserables (LA premiere company), and conducting the national tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Song and Dance starring Melissa Manchester. He has accompanied a wide variety of artists from Marilyn Horne, Jennifer Hudson, Florence Henderson, Carol Burnett, to Adam Lambert, Nancy Wilson, Donna McKechnie, John Lithgow, Kelsey Grammar, and Jason Graae. Other credits: on stage pianist for Carrie Fisher in her brilliant one woman show, Wishful Drinking, at the Geffen Playhouse; west coast premiere of David Shire and Richard Maltby Jr’s Closer Than Ever, musical direction—Fiddler on the Roof (Utah Shakespeare Festival), five S.T.A.G.E benefits (George and Ira Gershwin, Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Harry Warren and Marvin Hamlisch, Comden and Green), one Actors Fund Benefit (Richard Rodgers) – each directed by David Galligan; two Les Girls Benefits (for National Breast Cancer Coalition), three WESPARK benefits (directed by Barbara Epstein), four of Sheryl Lee Ralph’s Divas Simply Singing Benefits — all star studded. He recently also accompanied a reading at the Music Academy of the West of the second act of Stephen Schwartz’s new opera Séance on a Wet Afternoon (with Lauren Flanigan and Kim Josephson) preceding its world premiere for Opera Santa Barbara later in 2009. As a songwriter/composer—he has been featured in ASCAP Rising Songwriter Showcases on both coasts, Cabaret Conventions at New York’s Town Hall, the Hollywood Roosevelt’s Cinegrill; he has had music and songs (in collaboration with Lindy Robbins) performed in the ’93-’98 editions of the Ringling Brothers’ Circus; the musicals Heartbeats (in collaboration with Amanda McBroom), The Gay 90’s – Looking Back and Moving On and Vampire Virgins from Venus. Gerald played his song “Mary” (written in collaboration with Faye Greenberg) – a paean to The Mary Tyler Moore Show, performed on the 2003 TV Land Awards show by Eric McCormack – in the presence of the original cast of the landmark sitcom. – one of the thrills of his life.
