Conductor Bernard Labadie and Pianist Benedetto Lupo Join the LA Phil

Conductor Bernard Labadie returns to Walt Disney Concert Hall to lead the Los Angeles Philharmonic in three performances of an all-Mozart program, Friday, December 16, at 11 am, Saturday, December 17, at 8 pm, and Sunday, December 18, at 2 pm. Joining for both his LA Phil and Walt Disney Concert Hall debuts is pianist Benedetto Lupo performing Piano Concerto No. 27, the last work Mozart composed in the form. The program also includes the Chaconne from the Idomeneo ballet music and Symphony No. 41, “Jupiter,” the composer’s final symphony.

Bernard Labadie has been a sought-after guest conductor with major North American orchestras since his triumphant debut with the Minnesota Orchestra in 1999. In addition to the LA Phil, the 2011/12 season also includes his debut at Tanglewood and appearances with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, New World Symphony, Utah Symphony, Vancouver Symphony, and others. Labadie’s extensive discography includes many critically-acclaimed recordings on the Dorian, ATMA and Virgin Classics labels, including Handel’s Apollo e Dafne and his collaboration with Les Violons du Roy and La Chapelle de Québec in Mozart’s Requiem, both winning Canada’s Juno Award. A complete recording of C.P.E. Bach’s Cello Concertos with Truls Mørk and Les Violons du Roy is slated for release soon, as well as a recording with Ian Bostridge and The English Concert, both for Virgin Classics.

Like Labadie, Lupo made his Tanglewood Festival debut this season performing Mozart’s Concerto K. 456. Other 2011/12 highlights include the Montreal Symphony, Vancouver Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, and the Malaysian Philharmonic. In his native Italy he can be heard with the Verdi Orchestra in Milan, National RAI Orchestra in Turino and the festivals of Brescia and Bergamo.

Upbeat Live pre-concert events take place in Walt Disney Concert Hall’s auditorium one hour and 15 minutes prior to the Friday concert and in BP Hall one hour prior to the Saturday and Sunday concerts, and are free to all ticket holders. Russell Steinberg, composer, conductor, performer, Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Youth Orchestra and faculty member at UCLA, hosts.
