Kansas City Repertory Theatre announced today that the musical phenomenon SWEENEY TODD: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street has been added to its 2017-2018 season in the final mainstage slot.

The Tony Award-winning musical thriller, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler, opened on Broadway in 1979 and is based on the 1973 play Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street by Christopher Bond. It opened in the West End in 1980 and won the Tony Award for Best Musical and London's Olivier Award for Best New Musical.

Sweeney Todd tells the story of the obsessively vengeful barber Benjamin Barker and his twisted partnership with the outrageous Mrs. Lovett who together, devise a devilish plot to add a special ingredient to a recipe that has all of London dying for their pies. Sondheim's gloriously gruesome musical combines melodrama and murder and features one of the most chilling, thrilling scores ever written for the stage.

"Sweeney Todd is the kind of rich, robust musical that will transform anyone into a musical theatre fan," said Artistic Director Eric Rosen, "Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler are at their dark and macabre best with this multi-award-winning production. Sondheim is the greatest musical theater composer and lyricist of the 20thCentury, and Sweeney Todd is his most towering and operatic work - truly a perfect blend of music and theater."

The 2017/18 season is underwritten by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, ArtsKC, Ford Motor Company Fund, Hall Family Foundation, Hallmark Corporate Foundation, Hearst Foundations, Muriel McBrien Kauffman Foundation, Shubert Foundation, Missouri Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
