Island Magic to Take Center Stage at College of the Mainland's Galveston Art Show, March 2014

Quintessential Galveston-from creatures of the sea to Dickens on the Strand-forms the backdrop for the newest exhibit at the Galveston Art League featuring works by students in the College of the Mainland Senior Adult Program.

The featured artists for March, COM Senior Adult Program students created a dazzling array of more than 50 works, including acrylic paintings, watercolors, paper mache animals, stained glass and jewelry.

The juried exhibition had nearly 90 submissions and Carol Outlaw-Wagner, an artist and co-coordinator of the Texas City Art Show, selected the pieces. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Students in the COM Senior Adult Program garnered attention last fall after earning several prizes in the Galveston Art League juried show. The league offered the program a solo exhibit of their work shortly after.

Nancy House, who teaches a class in paper mache animals at COM, coordinated the show. House's piece "My First Husband," received a first place award at last fall's Galveston Art League show.

All pieces in the exhibit are for sale. The Galveston Art League is located at 2117 A Post Office St. The gallery is open Thursday through Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

The COM Senior Adult Program also offers classes in oil, watercolor and acrylic painting, drawing and mosaic art as well as language, fitness and computer courses at a nominal cost to those over 55.
