BELLS ARE RINGING

(It was nominated for four Tony Awards and won two.)

THE CABARETS

BCCM will round out the 2015-16 season with cabaret evenings at the Performance Centre of the Ensemble Theatre, featuring the music of two of the Great American Songbook's most storied songwriters.

In February 2016 (3 performances-specific dates to be announced), BCCM will present Heart and Soul, a tribute to Hoagy Carmichael. In some circles, Hoagy Carmichael was as well known as an actor as he was as one of the America's best composers of popular music. He appeared in fourteen major motion pictures, and sang at least one of his songs in each. His most famous role was in the Academy Award-winning The Best Years of Our Lives in which his character teaches a veteran who had lost both arms in the war to play Chopsticks on the piano with his prostheses. Carmichael's winning personality made him popular on the screen and later on television, but it was music that was at his core. When he wasn't writing his own words, he collaborated with some of the Twentieth Century's best lyricists, including Johnny Mercer and Frank Loesser. His legacy includes such timeless hits as Stardust, Georgia On My Mind, The Nearness of You, I Get Along Without You Very Well, Skylark, and Heart and Soul.

In May 2016 (3 performances-specific dates to be announced), BCCM will return to the music of George Gershwin. Embraceable You will focus on the songs Gershwin wrote in the 1930s before his death from a brain tumor at the tragically-young age of only 39. The catalogue he left behind can only make one long for more and imagine the magnificence of the music he would have written had he lived. Among the songs he wrote in his last years were But Not for Me, Bidin' My Time, I Got Rhythm, Of Thee I Sing, Who Could Ask for Anything More, You Can't Take That Away from Me, Nice Work If You Can Get It, Our Love is Here to Stay, and of course, Embraceable You.
