Jake and Elwood Blues are "on a mission of the Lord." The Catholic orphanage where the brothers grew up, threatened with dissolution if it can not immediately pay a tax liability, and so Jake and Elwood must raise $ 5,000 within a few days. Legally, as their sister Mary has drummed with the ruler.
