SRO Productions to Close Doors

Forced by budget cuts to shut down, SRO productions in Southfield is closing its doors by opening its final show: A Little Work by Anita Diamant & Stephen McCauley. Diamant plans to attend the May 19th performance.

Director Maureen Mansfield of Farmington Hills refers to SRO as “the little theatre that could… with its tiny stage and its even tinier budget.”

“After providing over two decades of affordable quality theater it's heartbreaking that the economy has forced the city to take away this wonderful resource,” says Mansfield.

A Little Work is written by two big names: Anita Diamant (author of New York Times Bestseller, "The Red Tent") and Stephen McCauley (author of "The Object of My Affection"). It tells the story of two middle aged friends: Mia, who teaches 8th Grade English, is married and has a daughter in college and Katherine, who is a minor celebrity for writing pop-psych books like The Myth of the Ugly Duckling.

When Katherine asks Mia if she can stay with her for a few days because she's "having a little work done", Mia hasn't a clue the impact that the visit will have on her life. Both women set on a course of self-discovery, and both realize that examining your life and maintaining relationships isn't always easy. Sometimes it requires a little work.

Mansfield says, “This show is about real women who face real issues in todays world. Women struggling to stay relevant in a society that worships youth. I know women like this...I am one of these women. I think the people in the audience will feel the same way. “

And she’s quite nostalgic about the end of SRO, saying many actors in community and civic theatre have taken the stage or watched from the house at one time or another. “When this production is over, the set will be broken down for the last time,” says Mansfield. “The prop room will be cleaned out, the lights will be taken down and many tears will be shed.”
