Flat Rock Playhouse presents The Last Five Years, from May 29 - June 22 at the Playhouse Downtown. This beautiful, modern musical explores the five-year relationship between two young New Yorkers, Jamie, a rising novelist, and Cathy, a struggling actress. What makes this story unusual is its simultaneous, yet vastly different depiction from end to end. Jamie is telling the audience the story from the beginning while Kathy shares her story from the end. It is probably the only love story where the two central characters only lock eyes once... in the middle of their story... during their wedding. The rest of the time the audience is a party to their lives, witnessing the ups and downs of their relationship.

The Last Five Years has been praised for its beautiful music, winning the 2002 Drama Desk Award for outstanding music and lyrics, as well as receiving Drama Desk nominations for Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Orchestrations, among others. The music is a seamless, brilliantly constructed hybrid of Broadway and pop, woven around some of the most creative, poignant lyrics audiences will hear in a modern musical. Even the orchestration puts the audience on notice: Cello, Violin, Piano, Bass and Guitar.

The Last Five Years debuted in 2001 and ran off-Broadway from March until May 2002. It is written by Jason Robert Brown, who is currently represented on Broadway and in the upcoming Tony Awards.

The show is directed by Producing Artistic Director for the Playhouse, Vincent Marini. In addition to producing the innovative "Music on the Rock" series, Marini has directed Les Miserables; For The Glory; A Few Good Men; Guys and Dolls; The Buddy Holly Story; Celtic Christmas; Our Show of Shows; Cotton Patch Gospel; and Hank Williams: Lost Highway.

Cast members are Cassie Okenka and Austin Owen.

Music Director is Alex Shields. Set Design is by Chris Mueller. Costume design is by Rebecca Conway. Lighting design is by Stephen Terry.
