If you're wondering whether or not 2013 was a fantastic year for the cabaret art form in New York, all you have to do is scan the amazing list of nominees for this year's BroadwayWorld New York Cabaret Awards and you'll know it was one of the best ever. But from one year to the next the types of performances can be very different. So while we started the nomination process with 22 categories, we pared it down to 18 due to a lack of candidates in the categories of Male Jazz Vocalist, Singer/Songwriter Show, and Female and Male Debut Shows. A few candidates with nominations in those categories were placed in others, such as Male and Female Vocalist.

(On a personal note, I want to thank everyone who nominated my show, Beyond American Pie: The Don McLean Songbook, in the Best Male Debut and Best Tribute Show categories. But given my involvement as director and editor for this Awards program--and as host for the Awards show at Joe's Pub on February 23--I felt it proper to eliminate myself from the competition.)

So now it's time for all you cabaret performers and fans to vote for the best singers, musicians, songs, and shows of the year. But before registering your ballots, please keep in mind that we shouldn't turn this process into something similar to voting for the Major League Baseball All-Star Teams, in which everyone can drop an infinite number of ballots in the ballpark boxes or vote multiple times online. Let's be on an honor system. Even if you have multiple email addresses, try to limit your ballot to one per person. To cabaret performer nominees: While we expect people who may have only seen your show to vote in multiple categories, please resist the temptation to solicit votes from people who haven't at least seen your show, let alone anyone else's. Voting will continue until Sunday night January 5 and the winners will be announced later that week. We hope that all the winners will be available to perform in the Awards show on February 23.

To cast your votes for the 2013 New York BWW Cabaret Awards, click on the link below and follow the instructions on the landing page. Once you input your email address, you're good to vote. By the way, if you see a performer's name misspelled or a show misnamed, please email me at: stephenhanks41@gmail.com. Congrats to all the nominees and best of luck in the final voting!
