Back by popular demand! After four packed houses and critical raves at Joe's Pub in 2016, and fresh from his acclaimed Off Broadway role in The New Group's production of Wallace Shawn's Evening at the Talk House, John Epperson returns to Joe's Pub in John Epperson: The Artist Principally Known as Lypsinka, a delightful evening of classic entertainment filled with stories, tunes, and a twist. Join John Epperson, aka The Goddess of Showbiz Lypsinka, at the piano in a jam-packed musical memoir as he sings, tickles the keys, and ricochets from Sondheim to rap, and from transgender icon Christine Jorgenson to Rodgers and Hammerstein. John Epperson - the real person behind Lypsinka - returns in John Epperson: The Artist Principally Known as Lypsinka for this special encore performance at Joe's Pub at The Public. With a nod to the urbane cabaret style of Bobby Short, Epperson's evening embraces classic entertainment filled with stories, tunes, and a few surprises. The entertainer commands the piano and stage with a musical journey that weaves together Stephen Sondheim, Frank Loesser, Jule Styne, Kay Thompson, Kander & Ebb, Comden & Green, Rodgers & Hammerstein, and transgender icon Christine Jorgenson. Jay Rogers directs the one-night-only show which returns to Joe's Pub (425 Lafayette Street), Saturday, May 13th at 7:30. Tickets are $25 and are available at JoesPub.com (direct link here) or by calling 212-967-7555.

Epperson's incomparable knowledge of the theatrical oeuvre is showcased in this glittering performance. In particular, his tributes to Betty Comden, Kay Thompson and Christine Jorgensen, were acclaimed by The New York Times as being "the ne plus ultra exemplar of a style that might be called zany chic ..." Next Magazine called it, "Hilarious! Touching and candid!" and of the finale, Stephen Sondheim's classic ballad "Anyone Can Whistle," said, "I have heard this song performed dozens of times ... but this was by far the best rendition. Simple and stoic ... intimate and personal, the night's finale proved a true testament to the fact that Epperson can stand on his own out of lashes and heels." Filled with anecdotes, Epperson illustrates his life by affectionately making Broadway classics his own personal story. Although the artist leaves his alter ego, Lypsinka, at home for this performance, the art of lip-synching does appear as an added bon-bon to this delightful evening.

John Epperson was born in Hazlehurst, Mississippi. As an actor, Epperson has appeared in BLACK SWAN, Witch Hunt with Dennis Hopper, Wigstock: The Movie, Angels in America, Kinsey, and Another Gay Movie. As a theater actor, he has appeared in The New Group's production of Evening at the Talk House by Wallace Shawn, I Could Go On Lip-Synching; Now It Can Be Lip-Synched, Lypsinka! A Day In The Life (two Drama Desk nominations), As I Lay Lip-Synching; Lypsinka Must Be Destroyed!, Lypsinka IS Harriet Craig!, Lypsinka! The Boxed Set (Washington, D.C. Helen Hayes Award Outstanding Non-Resident Production; LA Weekly Theatre Award Best Solo Performance; Drama Desk nomination), The Stepmother in NYCO production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella at Lincoln Center, The Passion of the Crawford (a fantasia on the personality of Joan Crawford), and, most recently, John Epperson: Show Trash, Lypsinka! The Trilogy, as Queen Aggravain in Once Upon A Mattress, and a new cabaret show John Epperson: The Artist Principally Known As Lypsinka. Among Epperson's written works are My Deah: Medea For Dummies (Obie-winning production), the staged musicals Ballet of the Dolls and Dial "M" For Model, and a rewrite of James Kirkwood's notorious Legends!, produced at Studio Theatre in D.C. He is the author of three screenplays and a teleplay, with more on the way. Mr. Epperson has also written for The Guardian, The New York Times, The Washington Post and Interview. Epperson and Lypsinka are the subjects of an Emmy-winning television documentary for PBS. For more information, visit lypsinka.com.
