BRIDGET EVERETT: ROCK BOTTOM

Now-October 16

Until October 11: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9:30PM, Saturdays at 11:30PM

Extension - October 14-16: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 9:30PM

$40 / $25 Members

Rock Bottom opened The Public's 2014-15 downtown season to critical acclaim and has extended until October 16. Created by the ferociously talented Bridget Everett with Tony Award-winning songwriting duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz and Matt Ray, ROCK BOTTOM is the entertainer's first major production since her 2007 musical At Least It's Pink. Everett, who The New York Times has called a "pure id on the rampage," barrels through life tip-toeing toward disaster, wine bottle by wine bottle and man by man. However, instead of succumbing to a chardonnay-induced stupor, Everett embraces a series of revelations that lead her and her voice of an angel to redemption. Originally commissioned as part of The Joe's Pub 2013 New York Voices series, Rock Bottom features new original songs written with Shaiman, Wittman, Ray and Horovitz.

Betty Buckley makes her Joe's Pub debut with a five piece band playing the music from her new album Ghostlight. When Buckley and Burnett were both 19 years old, living in Fort Worth, TX, they began making music together. Buckley, who has been called "The Voice of Broadway," is one of theater's most respected and legendary leading ladies. Burnett's high-demand status is marked by his uncanny ability to successfully combine his unique artistic sensibilities with massive commercial appeal. These two friends and talents created an atmosphere that takes us to another time and place. "T Bone single-handedly changed the world of music and makes each project more perfect than the last," says Buckley. "The gift of this project is beyond my ability to even express; it is my dream record."

MINNIE DRIVER

Tuesday, October 14 at 7:00PM

$25

As an in-demand TV and movie actor, Minnie Driver has not had a lot of time for her first love: making music, songwriting and singing. Before coming to national prominence in Good Will Hunting, Driver was first signed to a label in her native UK. Here she returns for her third Zoe/Rounder album, after a lengthy hiatus that included having her son and a flood of acting gigs. Ask Me to Dance is a bit of a departure from her previous two albums of original material, featuring her own interpretations of other artists' songs that have been important touchstones in her life. Here she brings her own inimitable style and take on songs by Elliott Smith, The Cure, Neil Young, John Prine, as well as Stevie Wonder and Frank Sinatra, among others. Some of these songs are ones that helped her survive her teenage years, waiting for someone to ask her to dance. Astounding as that may sound for someone like Minnie Driver, her vulnerability and great voice bring the material to life in new ways that speak to us all.

JAY NASH WITH JOSH DAY

Wednesday, October 15 at 7:00PM

$14 Adv / $18 Door

Levon Helm said that if you give it good concentration, good energy, good heart, and good performance, the song will play you. If that's true, then Jay Nash and Josh Day are well and truly played by the set of songs in their debut EP, Meet The Contenders. The collection breathes with musicality and grit in the tradition of heroes-The Band, Tom Petty, The Dead, Dylan. With a steady heartbeat and a hint of honky-tonk, this EP speaks of wanderers and highways, lovers and losers, good times and missed chances, swimming pools and movie stars, all with a ferocity born of hard work and honed skill. Nash and Day have been players and poets for the better part of two decades; they have been making music, telling tales, drinking whiskey, and having fun touring together as The Contenders since 2012.

Creating theater for one of the largest and most diverse audience bases in New York City for nearly 60 years, today the Company engages audiences in a variety of venues-including its landmark downtown home at Astor Place, which houses five theaters and Joe's Pub; the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, home to its beloved, free Shakespeare in the Park; and the Mobile Unit, which tours Shakespearean productions for underserved audiences throughout New York City's five boroughs. The Public's wide range of programming includes free Shakespeare in the Park, the bedrock of the Company's dedication to making theater accessible to all, new and experimental stagings at The Public at Astor Place, and a range of artist and audience development initiatives including its Public Forum series, which brings together theater artists and professionals from a variety of disciplines for discussions that shed light on social issues explored in Public productions.
