World of Tanks and HISTORY Partner to Commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Kursk

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Kursk, World of Tanks has partnered with HISTORY to recreate portions of one of the GREATEST TANK BATTLES in history using augmented reality. Richard Cutland, Wargaming's Head of Military Relations, will narrate the "The Tanks of Kursk" in a series of videos where viewers can watch German and Soviet tanks refight the battle in TABLETOP volumetric augmented reality, using the World of Tanks game engine. World of Tanks is a free-to-play online game, and a virtual museum in which players can explore exacting recreations of all of the tanks of WW2.

"We are delighted to work with World of Tanks on this exciting project," said Nestor Nieves, Director of Products, A+E Networks. "The HISTORY brand is always looking for new and innovative ways to engage our audiences. Augmented reality like this allows viewers to experience The Battle of Kursk in a way never before possible."

In the summer of 1943, the German army launched a double envelopment attack near the Russian city of Kursk to shorten their lines and regain the strategic initiative after the defeat at Stalingrad. The German defeat paved the way for the great Soviet victories of 1944 and 1945.

"Wargaming has, over the past few years, designed and deployed a number of Virtual and Augmented Reality projects with various museums and media partners," said Tracy Spaight, Director of Special Projects. "World of Tanks AR Spectate - which allows viewers to watch the battle unfold on a table in front of them - represents a significant leap forward in presentation technology."

World of Tanks AR Spectate is a new experimental platform that uses cutting-edge augmented reality technology to show World of Tanks game battles on any surface, with tanks battling it out in front of the viewer in miniature. World of Tanks AR Spectate uses proprietary local streaming technology to achieve World of Tanks highest-end PC graphics on an iPad, using Apple's ARKit to keep the AR 3D content rock-solid, stable and believable. The experience will be available to the World of Tanks community at industry events like Gamescom.

"World of Tanks AR Spectate is the stuff of Science fiction" said Tracy Spaight. "We are excited about the educational possibilities for this platform and are delighted to work with the HISTORY brand to share it with new audiences."
