Wilmington's first opera company will debut its inaugural performance of Franz Lehár's opera "The Merry Widow this summer.

According to Treasurer, Jerry Fingerhut, Opera Wilmington is now formally incorporated and is applying for federal non-profit status. A fundraising party was held where soprano Nancy King and tenor Michael Rallis performed to more than 50 people.

Franz Lehar's "The Merry Widow" will be on the main stage of the Cultural Arts Building at the University of North Carolina on July 25-27. Auditions will be scheduled this summer.

When opera fans, Jerry and Wendy Fingerhut moved to Wilmington from Manhattan in 2011, they began incorporating the idea of having live opera at the school. Wendy Fingerhut became involved with UNCW's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, broadcasting Metropolitan Opera Live simulcasts.
