Russian Opera Singer Elena Obraztsova Dies at Age 75

Russian Opera singer Elena Obraztsova died Monday at the age of 75, following a long illness.

Natalya Ignatenko, director of the Yelena Obraztsova Foundation released a statement saying, "The great Russian singer, whose name has become a symbol of Russian opera in the 20th century, has passed away."

Obraztsova performed all around the world during the Cold War and received many awards throughout her career. She also established the Yelena Obraztsova Charitable Foundation for Musical Arts in December 2011 to support and promote the performance of opera in Russia.

Obraztsova was to set to perform at the Kremlin Palace in December, but the performance was canceled due to health reasons. At the time, she was advised to spend winter months in the warmer climate of southern Germany. The opera star will be buried in Moscow.
