Composed by OPERA San Antonio Artistic Director Tobias Picker, Fantastic Mr. Fox features a fox who will stop at nothing to keep his family safe. "Fantastic Mr. Fox is full of tuneful arias and ensembles that you'll leave the theater humming," says Picker. "The Children's Chorus of Trees, featuring the Children's Chorus of San Antonio, watches over the antics of the Fox family and friends and the mean and selfish farmers, commenting like a Greek chorus. There is a soulful duet between Mr. Porcupine and Miss Hedgehog when they fall in love across a crowded room. And of course you'll see Mr. and Mrs. Fox lead the animal world in an elegant Fox Trot! I wrote this opera for children ages five through 115. There is humor and charm for every member of the family to enjoy. Please join us for this celebration of life and nature in song and a brilliantly illustrated and stunningly sung production."

Called "our finest composer for the lyric stage" by The Wall Street Journal, Tobias Picker has become one of America's most sought-after composers. He has written works for nearly every genre including opera, orchestra, chamber music and ballet. The Metropolitan Opera commissioned Picker's fourth opera, An American Tragedy, which premiered at the Met in 2005. His music is lyrical, theatrical and thrilling with an impressive dramatic range. This season, Mr. Picker celebrates his 60th birthday with new productions of four of his operas being presented across the U.S. including OPERA San Antonio's production of Fantastic Mr. Fox - a work that established Mr. Picker as a composer whose music appeals to all age groups.

The Santa Fe Opera gave the world premiere of Picker's widely acclaimed first opera, Emmeline, which was subsequently broadcast nationally on PBS's "Great Performances" series. The opera played to sold-out houses, standing ovations and international critical acclaim. His operatic adaptation of Roald Dahl's Fantastic Mr. Fox was commissioned and premiered by the Los Angeles Opera.
