Another New York holiday tradition returns to warm the holidays! Amore Opera's "Hansel & Gretel" gingerbread delight is back and this year is being presented for the first time in the Upper East Side at the Theatre at St. Jean's (on E. 76th between Lexington and 3rd Avenue).

This beloved, intimate production of Humperdinck's classic is sung in a wonderfully accessible English translation but maintains the style and flavor of the original. Both children and adults are thrilled to be so close to the action in the small theatre but surrounded by the professional singers and orchestra.

"It's almost like we were with Hansel and Gretel in the forest!", said one of our youngest patrons recently. Older audience members like the intimacy, also. "Amore's production is so much better than the big, overdone "Hansel & Gretel" that you see on some other (unnamed) stage in town," said one parent. "Here you feel like part of the action and part of the family."

"Hansel and Gretel" is being performed in a special 90-minute version, with a chamber orchestra under the direction of veteran conductor Richard Owen. Stage direction is by Amore Opera's Artistic Director, Nathan Hull. Amore favorites Hayden DeWitt and Smitha Johnson star as Hansel and Gretel, Anita Lyons returns for a second year as the witch, and Anna Veimeister and Robert Garner round out the extremely talented, charming cast as the Mother and the Father.

This is a "Hansel and Gretel" not to be missed. It plays Matinées at 2:30 between Christmas and New Year's Eve, December 27, 28, 29, and 30. Tickets are only $30, and can be purchased through Amore's website, www.amoreopera.org, by calling OvationTix at 866-811-4111 or at the door.

Now in its eighth season, the Amore Opera is continuing in its mission to entertain, educate and nurture music appreciation in youth, seniors and community members through affordable live performances of classical and overlooked operas, and provide a venue for a diversity of singers and musicians to perform in fully staged and orchestrated productions.

Tickets for Hansel and Gretel are only $30.00 . Tickets can be purchased directly through the Amore Opera Website at www.amoreopera.org or by calling 886-811-4111.

The beautiful Theatre at St. Jean's (the former Dicapo Opera) is conveniently situated in Manhattan's Upper East Side at the corner of E. 76th St. and Lexington Ave . Located in the basement of St. Jean Baptiste Church, it is a fully equipped opera house which offers full handicapped accessibility including an elevator to the theatre level.
