Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Plaza
1368 Fulton St Brooklyn, New York 11216

Songs From the A Train
Composed by Gilda Lyons

Performed by Jorrell Williams

AOP brings to Brooklyn two performances of Songs From the A Train by Gilda Lyons, based on the poetry of three Brooklyn children, commissioned as part of its I Hear America Singing program. Honoring Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Plaza's founder, Robert F. Kennedy, the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Holiday Party is an annual celebration that promotes literacy and healthy lifestyles in Central Brooklyn. Poet Angeli Rasbury brings her annual celebration of Kwanzaa honoring universal African-American heritage and culture with music performances, readings, and reflections.

Inspired by the poem by Walt Whitman, I Hear America Singing is a new music initiative that commissions composers to create operatic songs based on the poetry and prose of Americans of all ages and all walks of life. Created by American Opera Projects and The Walt Whitman Project in 2009, I Hear America Singing seeks to express the varied thoughts, feelings, and stories of the people of our nation into a communal voice that will resonate for all.
