Taj Mahal to Take the Stage at ECA with Shemekia Copeland 4/24

Edmonds Center for the Arts will welcome Grammy Award-winning singer Taj Mahal with singer Shamekia Copeland on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 only at 7:30pm.

Taj Mahal, a two-time Grammy winner and one of the most prominent American blues and roots artists, celebrates four decades of blues, roots, reggae, and beyond with his trio. A self-taught musician, Taj plays over 20 instruments including National Steel and Dobro guitars, and his extraordinary voice ranges from gruff and gravelly to smooth and sultry.

In his never-ending exploration of the complex origins and underpinnings of American music, Taj Mahal has forged a four-decade career by gathering and distilling countless musical traditions from a range of geographical and cultural sources: the Mississippi Delta, the Appalachian backwoods, the African continent, the Hawaiian islands, Europe, the Caribbean and so much more.

Shemekia Copeland has a profound passion for singing, matched with her huge, blast-furnace voice which gives her performance a timeless power and a heart-pounding urgency. Her music comes from deep within her soul and from the streets where she grew up, surrounded by the everyday sounds of the city. At a young age, Copeland is already a force to be reckoned with in the blues.

Heir to the rich tradition of soul drenched divas like Ruth Brown, Etta James and Koko Taylor, the singer was presented with Taylor's crown by her daughter, Cookie at the Chicago Blues Festival and given the honor of the new "Queen of the Blues" by official proclamation of the City of Chicago and the State of Illinois.

Edmonds Center for the Arts (ECA) is a non-profit performing arts facility located in picturesque downtown Edmonds, Washington. Housed in the historic original Edmonds High School building, ECA was remodeled and opened in October 2006 to be a cultural resource for the Puget Sound region through performing arts presentations, community partnerships and education outreach programs.
