NBC News reports that Grammy award-winning musician Emilio Navaira passed away yesterday at the age of 53. Along with the late singer Selena, the duo was considered the king and queen of Tejano-style music, which uses the accordion and the beat of European polka music and sets them to the form of traditional Mexican ballads.

Born in 1962, Navaira launched his career with David Lee Garza y Los Musicales in the late 1980s. His musical and dancing influence, including the popular "Emilio Shuffle," are still popular with fans today.

The Recording Academy has issued the following statement on his passing:

May 17, 2016

Possessing one of the greatest voices in the history of Tejano music, Emilio Navaira was an icon in the genre. Both a GRAMMY® and a Latin GRAMMY® Award winner, he showcased his strong Texas roots in everything he did. From his relentless touring schedule to his impressive lyrics and signature sound, Emilio was beloved by many, and helped to shape an entire genre of music. Our creative community has lost a uniquely gifted talent, and our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege and honor of working with him. He will be missed.
