NJ Symphony Orchestra's Jacques Lacombe to Conduct SCHEHERAZADE & PETROUCHKA

Music Director Jacques Lacombe and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra present Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade and the 1947 version of Stravinsky's Petrouchka, October 30-November 2, in a program celebrating the fairytale-inspired works of two Russian masters.

Performances take place on Thursday, October 30, at 7:30 pm at bergenPAC in Englewood and Saturday, November 1, at 8 pm and Sunday, November 2, at 3 pm at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark. Classical Conversations with NJSO Associate Conductor Gemma New begin one hour before each performance.

Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade draws on the classic Arabian tales of One Thousand and One Nights. Stravinsky's Petrouchka weaves Russian folk songs into a ballet about a Shrovetide Fair puppet who falls in love with a ballerina. "Storytelling is at the heart of the Russian ballet tradition," Lacombe says. "Diaghilev produced Scheherazade as a ballet in Paris one year before Petrouchka, so there is a natural continuum between these two works."

Inspired by the legendary stories upon which the program's works are based, NJSO Accents include a fast-paced post-concert storytelling event led by Storytelling Arts Inc.'s Helen Wise on November 1. Concertgoers can share their favorite NJSO stories in recorded pre-concert sessions on October 30 and November 2; there are a limited number of sessions available, and advance registration by phone at 1.800.ALLEGRO (255.3476) is required.
