Guillermo Del Toro has confirmed to IGN that he is, in fact, working on the upcoming DARK UNIVERSE project with DC Comics. The ensemble film, in the vein of THE AVENGERS, would feature many of the supernatural heroes fans have come to love.

"I'm writing the outline and we're already in talks with a writer," he said in a video interview. "...People are probably going to be happy with who we have chosen - he accepted. I've been courting this writer, who I think is the perfect guy for this job. We're doing it. Hopefully it will happen."

del Toro goes on to explain that DARK UNIVERSE has been in development prior to THE AVENGER's release, and isn't just a capitalization on the now lucrative ensemble-hero structure.

"[DC COMICS] were already galvanized to launch 'Justice League' and they were galvanized to make their universe cohesive... They are really, really, with 'Superman', very, very confident with what they have. They are now feeling they have two pillars: Batman and Superman."

He goes on to comment on the studio's "foundation" to build upon the two legendary heroes, and has no desire to abandon them any time soon.

Del Toro has made a name for himself in the film industry due to his work on such movies as HELLBOY, PAN'S LABYRINTH, and MIMIC. His next film, PACIFIC RIM, starring Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and DIEGO KLATTENHOFF, will arrive in theaters on July 12, 2013.
