Chocolate's (Cocao) reputation as an Aphrodisiac originated in South America thousands of years ago. Both the Aztec and Mayan cultures sought after Cocao thought to have magical and aphrodisiac like qualities.

A substance called Phenylethylamine (PEA) produced naturally in the human brain is released nervous system. When one is happy or experiencing feelings of love, and or passion, they are feeling the effects of PEA. This causes a rapid mood change, a rise in blood pressure, increasing the heart rate and inducing those feelings of well being, or a sense of euphoria, which usually is linked with being in love.

Phenylethylamine, is also found in chocolate. When chocolate is eaten, it also releases PEA into the system, producing those same euphoric effects. Scientifically observed, it is not unreasonable to assume that it's probably these effects, which gave a rise to the chocolates reputation as an aphrodisiac.
